Plucky 16-year-old Cassie Robbins' (Reese Witherspoon) carefree life is drastically changed when she learns she has leukemia. At first she undergoes chemotherapy, but the treatment fails, and only a bone-marrow transplant will save her. With the list of possible donors very small, Cassie's parents (Joanna Kerns, Bruce Davison) must make an impossible decision: keep searching and risk running out of time, or allow their young son, who is a perfect match, to undergo the dangerous surgery.

Actors do their best in these circumstances, with Witherspoon bearing up particularly well under the relentless melodramatic pounding. However, nobody comes out very well in this sentimental mush.
