Suburban couple Richard Harmon (Dick Van Dyke) and his wife, Barbara (Debbie Reynolds), have exhausted their patience in their marriage. Bored and no closer to fixing their problems through counseling, the couple opts to divorce, and the proceeding tug-of-war over children, money and possessions reveals that maintaining their marriage was far easier than ending it. Along the way are attempts for both at new relationships, with the subject of alimony playing a hidden role in matters.

Undoubtedly, the movie's makers sat down to several screenings of Divorce Italian Style with pencils and pads in hand and mapped out American counterpart situations. But the ideas do gain in the American translation.

This comedy has teeth. Dick Van Dyke and Debbie Reynolds were wonderful together with a supporting cast that added to theirs, and the film’s, punch. It’s a difficult fine line to walk for a comedy to make me laugh while conveying some biting social commentary. As a child of divorce it resonated with me. Heartily recommended.

While firmly imbedded in 60 style and culture, the film nevertheless humorously touches on many of the difficult timeless realities created by long term relationships and divorce. A very fun cast. I especially enjoyed the insanity of Debbie Reynolds character being on a date with another divorced man (Tom Bosley later of Happy Days) and attempting to pick up the kids. The convoluted mess of broken families each trying to get their kids results in one child inevitably being left behind--poignant.
