Audience Member Season 25 was a marked improvement over Season 24, however The Greatest Show In the Galaxy was, in my opinion, the weakest of the stories told within, and it suffered, more than any other in the last 2 years of the series, the same problems that plagued S24, as well as a lot of the Colin Baker stories. Primarily, it features a couple of characters and plot-threads that are quirky but end up going absolutely nowhere, usually snuffed out in quick moments that seem only to exist in order to maintain the stakes. The dorky kid looking to see/partake in the Greatest Show doesn't even interact with ANY of the main characters of the episode (TARDIS crew nor guest characters), and his demise is ultimately just a rehash of the darker moments seen earlier. The guest villains are interesting at least, and it is a nice twist that the guest cast is almost ALL villains, rather than the usual half-good/half-bad, and their performances were good. But the story itself is just okay enough - some neat concepts that didn't really have much of a place to go. Ace and the Doctor arrive at a barren planet where the main attraction is a 'psychic circus' where the entrance ticket is really an invitation to be killed in front of a ravenous audience. The story is confusing but enticing, and although I wouldn't call this a classic from the era, I would say it certainly has enough to make it worth a watch, with enough creepy scenes and characters to leave an imprint on many a kid's mind (I can certainly remember elements of it from when I saw it as a 7 year old). The 'rapping' segments reminded me of the embarrassingly strange sung introductions to each scene in the Hartnell story 'The Gunfighters,' and make the show feel pretty dated. But the main clown enemy is superbly frigtening and well realised, and some of the scenes are up there with the best of the 7th Doctor's tenure. Not consistently great, but it has its moments.
