During World War II, Alfred Jones (Alan Bates) loses a hand during the bombing of London. Now working as a translator at a chocolate factory in Geneva, Alfred falls in love with Anna-Luise Fischer (Greta Scacchi), who resents her sadistic father, Dr. Fischer (James Mason). After they marry, Alfred meets with Dr. Fischer, who invites him to one of his dinner parties -- in which Fischer humiliates his wealthy guests to see how much they'll put up with in return for money at the end of the evening.
