Audience Member This is the absolute worst DVD transfer I have ever seen in my life. It's formatted in such a way, that the sides of the screen are cut off, leaving a lot of scenes feeling disorienting or unfinished--hell, there are some conversations where one or more of the people talking aren't even on screen, because that part of the film is gone! But even if this hadn't been a problem, the incredibly dark lighting in a lot of the scenes, and the incessant, jarring jump cuts still remain. Characters seem to just teleport from place to place, with no explanation of where they are or how they got there. It instantaneously goes from scenes such as a fight in a forest to the same characters standing around inside a building on a regular basis. As for the fights themselves, it's hard to get excited about a fight scene when you can't see what the hell is going on, both due to this sort of schizophrenic editing, and lighting conditions so dark, I'm surprised the actors weren't eaten by a grue. Technical issues aside though, it really wouldn't matter even if you COULD see what was happening in those scenes, because you still probably wouldn't know who was fighting who, and why. Characters are thrown in with absolutely no introduction a lot of the time, and often they disappear just as abruptly. The "plot" leads a Schrodinger's Cat-type of existence, and doesn't even introduce the jade "arhats" (called something completely different, like "lo-hans" in the actual film), until about an hour in. Incredibly, I might have been willing to forgive all of this, if the fight scenes had at least been entertaining. But they weren't. I have never been so bored during a kung fu movie. In short: "The Eighteen Jade Arhats" is a horrible mess. With so many other martial arts flicks from this era that are actually entertaining, there is no reason to waste your time on this bore. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member An Ole School Kung Fu Movie, they had all the moves in this one, with some sound effects I have never heard in any other kung fu movie. Mostly all fight scenes one of those kung fu movies where 50 guys attack one giy and the one guy wins. A Good Rental, but if your a Kung Fu Collector try this one out, better then early Bruce Lee Movies. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews
