When I sat down to watch Netflix’s Enter the Anime, I was excited to dive into what promised to be a fascinating exploration of the anime world. Unfortunately, the documentary left me disappointed and confused about its purpose. Instead of celebrating anime’s artistry and rich history, it felt more like a long advertisement for Netflix’s own projects, like Castlevania and Aggretsuko. It barely skimmed the surface of what makes anime such a beloved medium and avoided discussing its cultural impact or iconic creators like Hayao Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli. The tone was another letdown—too casual and out of sync with the depth and passion anime deserves. As someone who loves anime, I found the focus on Netflix’s titles frustrating, and the lack of real substance left me feeling this could’ve been so much more. If you’re hoping to learn about anime’s unique history or its global influence, this documentary just doesn’t deliver. It’s disappointing, and honestly, there are better ways to explore anime than sitting through this shallow take.

I was really interested in how anime evolved into what it is today and what the various influences over time have been. It's such an awesome art form - I really wanted to learn more. The documentary starts off seeming to want to answer those questions too. And then it devolves into the worst hour of programming I have ever seen. It was so bad in so many ways that it's hard to count them all.
1. I can almost hear the director saying ‘let's make it edgy'. In the process, she decides to curse for no reason, show herself a lot, and uses frequent cuts and special effects, which is super distracting. It's clear that the director doesn't get anime (she says this herself) and doesn't really care to, which is just insulting to the fans. Come on Netflix - you couldn't get someone who actually likes it?
2. At one point, well into the documentary, the author ‘decides' to go to Japan to learn more. Brilliant idea! Why are you wasting our time by not just starting there?
3. There is practically zero learning in the documentary. However, the 2 minutes from minute 23-35 on Toei animation were interesting.
4. Speaking of respect, the whole thing felt like it was disrespectful to the Japanese culture. The director attempts to make the creators of anime appear to be as wild and strange as the anime they create, which largely fails spectacularly. She paints the anime culture as ‘crazy', which I think she takes to mean ‘zany', but the approach is so over the top.
5. As the critics of this awful creation state, it's an informercial for Netflix. And a really really terrible one.
I would love to see a real documentary on the topic Netflix.
