Alec B What it lacks in coherence it makes up for with ambition. One of the truly weirdest attempts at folk horror. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review g j A boring film with bad acting and cheesy practical effects. No wonder you've never heard of it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/23 Full Review Audience Member More interesting than THE WITCH and THE MISSION Although it was shot in the 1980s, the graphics for this are ahead of its time. It uses different lenses and color palettes to set a strange ambiance as it travels through the colonial period of America. It was made by an award-winning photographer, and the skill behind the camera is apparent throughout the movie. The ingenuity of the plot is remarkable, as it takes place during a time when French colonists and Native Americans competed against the English colonies. Its portrayals of the lives of the colonists are well-thought-out and very realistic. It centers around theories that people who colonized the Americas could be almost as spiritual as the people who inhabited the land. The evil witch is super creative and intricate, and the good witch is interesting to watch. The acting is very believable by Dennis Lipscomb and Guy Boyd, as well as the actresses. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review michael d Bizarre and satisfying. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member It starts out looking like there is no way it's going to be good.... then it starts getting more and more twisted and dark as it goes. The plot, however, could have been more developed and more clearly stated. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Gregory P Criminally underrated Horror/Fantasy GEM finally gets a proper Blu-ray release. I have loved this film for a very long time & have personally, worn out 2 VHS copies showing it off to friends. I like to take personal credit for keeping this film alive in the minds of random strangers around the country. (LOL...it's funny, because it's TRUE.) This is one of few films I would ever suggest a remake. No changes; just a proper remake with better effects. YES. I WANT them to keep the frogs! The atmosphere shouldn't be replaced by jump scares & the full frontal nudity should remain. Not for sex purposes, you pervs, but for the genuine HORROR of a group of naked people, covered in who-knows-what, chasing you in a dark forest....just the idea of that is pretty frightening, in itself! Perhaps, the guys who did The Evil Dead remake or The Witch might take up the mantle. (The latter, I suspect, has probably viewed this film at some point in his early life! The two are very much alike.) To begin with: The story is great. It's thick & rich & starts & goes....and while some of the FX are cheese, other moments fit nicely for the budget & for the time. Considering the subject matter, the actors take their roles VERY SERIOUSLY and are arguably, what save this film overall; even though the reviews at the time were less than flattering to them specifically. You genuinely care about some of these characters & want them to survive. The children don't come off as precocious, as most often do in films with adult themes; they pretty much just play off of the adults, rather than try any "scene-stealing" of their own. It was also a good choice to have the teenager as the narrator, 'cause while the adults are lost in fear & emotion and the younger children don't have a clue at all, the teenager WOULD be the one to.........wonder, through it all. It's a shame this film was so overlooked. It might've sparked an entirely new genre of Horror/Fantasy on its own by now. Slasher films were all the rage when this came out. The masses just didn't know how to take this film or what to do with it. So, they simply forgot about it.... I've watched this on LSD. It was a trip...... Highly recommended for fans of "Legend", "The Witch" or "Suspiria". Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
