Audience Member I will say that this film really gets me in.This movie makes me stressful all the time. It's so stressful to wait the ending though you know it is not the happy ending. The lack of conversation and the music score make this movie more stressful Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Touching, beautiful and well-made, this movie marks a great reflexion on a touchy subject. The performances are wonderful. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Sometimes parents just don't understand the weight they put on their children that should merely be left to do their homework and play in the park. Director Soo-il Jeon (I came from Busan) shows us the neglect of what Jin-Taek Im does with his character towards Yeon-mi Yoo who (medaforacly speaking) plays the kid holding a bag full of rocks. Synopsis: Young Hoon (Taek) works in a mining area that gets him sick, wasted and laid off wondering what else he can do to make ends meet. With no wife, a special child on his plate and a normal daughter, he drifts away from his responsibilities putting all the stress onto his youngest child Yeong Rim (Yoo) to hold the fort. You're not going to find the best performances in this film, even with Yeong-jin Jo (Unforgettable, Forever the moment) who seemed to have been cut from the rest of the film considering she may or may not have been an important piece to the whole struggle. What you're going to find is some soft spoken direction with very little dialogue and an interesting tale about a little girl - played fairly well by Yeon-mi Yoo, her first film - having to grow up a little more quicker than your average kid at heart. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Un petit village minier en Coree du Sud, l'hiver : superbes plans fixes. La jeune actrice est formidable (une sorte de Kikujiro au feminin)... Une petite merveille de recit, avec une fin etonnante (a laiser decanter et a mediter..) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member We're introduced to a sweet and loving 9 year old girl. Her father has just been informed he has become ill working down the mines and so loses his job without compensation. Her brother is 11 but has the mental age of 3. Needless to say this isn't the happiest tale in the world. Luckily though it doesn't wallow in self-pity. Instead the film has many inspiring and happy moments such as the relationship between the girl and her brother. She's the caring mother who is absent from this story. She looks out for him, relates to him and does what is best for him. As the father begins to crack under the pressure it is our 9 year old heroin who gives a wonderful and mature performance. The scenery is excellent in its representation of an industrial town surrounded by nature, as beautiful mountains cast shadows over the mines. The ending is a bold and even brutal step and could have come off as a sudden and even creepy end but due to the performances it comes to a bittersweet stop. Quiet and thoughtful with smiles and tears aplenty. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Tragic and cliché child story, but interestingly carried along by the nine-year old star, who saves the family in a Koreeda-like fashion.
