Richard Brody New Yorker There are filmmakers lurking here, and their involvement in the unfolding action highlights Hong's multilayered, self-deprecating self-portrait-and his ambivalent view of a milieu that is inescapably his own. Rated: B+ Oct 5, 2005 Full Review Richard James Havis The Hollywood Reporter Hong, who reportedly always carries a notebook with him, is an excellent observer of the minutiae of daily life. Oct 4, 2005 Full Review Sean Gilman The Chinese Cinema Tale of Cinema compounds the self-obsession of the Hongian hero by conflating it with the act of both making and receiving cinema itself. Jun 11, 2021 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site What are the director's burning concerns? He plays his cards a little too close to the vest. We are all the poorer for it. Feb 15, 2021 Full Review Gabriel Ricard Cultured Vultures Tale of Cinema... is nonetheless one of the most remarkable, surreal, and occasionally confusing film-watching experiences you could ever hope to have. Dani G Maybe you have to rewind at the end to catch a little detail that opens up much more of what you've just watched. A subtle change of direction at the half point of the film. If you don't get it, maybe you'll have trouble understanding the whole Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Robson C Em Seoul, duas histórias se encontram. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/23 Full Review isla s This is a bizarre film, with 2 interconnecting stories. I'm not entirely sure I follow quite how it portrays the supposed tale of cinema, even though one of the stories involves a famous film maker. It's a quirky watch with some good characters and a thoughtful feel to it but it didn't particularly appeal to me. This is quite a subtle Japanese film, one which you may enjoy, depending on what your keen on or hoping for. I wouldn't actively recommend it as such though, no. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member What a boring piece of crap. 2/5 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw Tale of Cinema on the last day of the festival when they replay all of the films that were In Competition. Seen at the Bazin Theatre in the Palais. In Competition for the Palme d'Or. I really have nothing good to say. Lots of people walked out, but I stuck through it. I honestly couldn't tell you what it was about. I can't even describe the plot in anyway because I have no clue what it was supposed to be about or what happened. The characters switched halfway through, suddenly there were all new characters for no discernable reason. The only way I can describe the film is a student film with slightly better lighting. the performances were bad, there was no plot, the cinematography was unimpressive. I can't believe this was actually chosen to be in competition. The Opinion: My god, what a terrible movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I love the hate that Hong Sang-soo's movie elicit in people who can't just admit they are simple minded entertainment seeking non-thinkers. But not as much as I love watching his movies. This one is a favorite of mine. Complex and interesting and eminently re-watch-able. Some of the best acting and film making being done today. I feel like people not liking his movies is like people going into an art museum and getting mad at the paintings for not being exciting enough. Art isn't entertainment. Empty, flat, and boring are not useful descriptions of bad art they are descriptions of boring entertainment. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
