Tomris Laffly Variety For a metaphysical love-conquers-all tale, "Grace and Grit" offers very little substance around such lofty concepts as existence, spirituality and romantic harmony. Jun 4, 2021 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times If you can make it through the first ten minutes of "Grace and Grit" without groaning, then your tolerance for New Age folderols, saccharin voice-overs and seraphic gazes is higher than mine. Jun 3, 2021 Full Review Tara McNamara Common Sense Media Everyone has a story, but not everyone's story is cinematic -- and while the Wilbers' experience may deserve our compassion, this depiction doesn't deserve our viewership. Rated: 1/5 Jun 8, 2021 Full Review Wade Major FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's very ambitious, but it doesn't feel like there's a narrative direction to it. Ryan M "Grace and Grit" compels audiences to confront the stark realities of life. The cinematography offers viewers an insightful exploration of the complexities that arise in relationships, particularly when one partner is dealing with illness. Throughout the film, we are encouraged to look beyond the afflicted individual and recognize the ripple effects that one person's health challenges can have on those around them. As someone who has faced illness myself, "Grace and Grit" prompted me to empathize with Treya’s partner, who transitions from scholar to caregiver. This film powerfully captures the gravity of battling illness while preserving the humanity of the experience. It is profoundly moving and beautifully executed, leaving a lasting impact. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Justin C One of the most impactful cinematic experiences of my life, The depth of the authors, process, And the permission given feels like Justice and for what it’s worth a sentimental conclusion. I was able to live this process in a way where I felt “allowed in”, and for that I am grateful! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/24/24 Full Review Edward J Grace and Grit is a powerful and moving film that tells the true story of Ken and Treya Wilber, a couple who faced the ultimate test of love and faith when Treya was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after their marriage. Based on Ken's acclaimed memoir of the same name, the film explores the spiritual and emotional journey of the Wilbers as they cope with Treya's illness and seek meaning and healing in their lives. The film is directed by Sebastian Siegel, who also wrote the screenplay and produced the film. Siegel shows a remarkable sensitivity and respect for the source material, as well as a keen eye for capturing the beauty and grace of nature, which plays a significant role in the film's aesthetics and symbolism. The film also features an original score by Alex Ebert, which adds to the emotional impact of the film. The film is anchored by the performances of Mena Suvari and Stuart Townsend, who play Treya and Ken respectively. Suvari delivers a stunning and courageous performance as Treya, who undergoes a physical and spiritual transformation as she battles cancer and embraces various forms of therapy and meditation. Suvari portrays Treya's pain, joy, vulnerability, and strength with authenticity and nuance. Townsend is equally impressive as Ken, who struggles to balance his role as a husband, caregiver, and philosopher. Townsend conveys Ken's devotion, frustration, and wisdom with subtlety and depth. Grace and Grit is a film that celebrates the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit. It is a film that will touch your heart and inspire your soul. It is a film that you will not forget. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/24 Full Review Isa J "Grace and Grit" is an emotionally captivating film that beautifully portrays the complexities of love, loss, and resilience. It was brutal...an unexpected raw and stark jolt. It captures a deeply human and elemental experience...and doesn't let go. It's beyond words...I don't know what else to say.
