05/13/2019 Though the ending's unnecessarily melodramatic this is another visually beautiful tale of existential angst from a master film maker. Steve Cochran's performance in the lead stands out - he articulates so much despite his lack of facility with words. But that's the Antonioni magic - he communicates so much subliminally there's no need for verbosity. See more 08/25/2013 Who would make a movie like this other than Antonioni? Yet, even having seen most of his later features, I wasn't prepared for the encroaching inevitability of the plot's finale. Steve Cochran (American noir star) plays a guy whose longtime companion (Alida Valli) suddenly up and leaves him. So, he takes his 5 year old daughter on the road with him, across the barren wintry fields of the Po Valley. He occasionally shacks up with the women he meets, who often have their own problems that he doesn't want to take on. He's lost, sad, unsure of what he's looking for, unable to commit to anything (a job, a relationship), and unable to return to the past. Antonioni's early film is stark but beautiful in many ways with strong echoes of Visconti's Ossessione (and other neo-realist films) but this director is unable to escape the gravitational pull of the alienation that would later dominate his oeuvre. Wie auch Fellini vollzog sich Ende der 50er Jahre bei ihm eine Periode des Übergangs von Neo-Realismus zu seinem späteren, persönlicheren Stil. So können wir noch das typische Italien der Neo-Realisten, düster, dreckig und kahl betrachten, aber auch schon Antonionis geniales Auge für Mise-en-scène und Komposition des Bildkaders. Gerade aus dieser Gegensätzlichkeit zieht Il Grido große Teile seiner Energie. Wenig neo-realistisch auch der Plot des Films, auch hier zeigt sich schon das ewige Thema, dass sich in Antonionis späteren Filmen wiederfinden lassen sollte. Ein Mann wird von seiner Freundin Irma verlassen, just als deren Mann in Australien endlich stirbt. Gedemütigt und verletzt verschwindet er mit ihrer gemeinsamen Tochter und beginnt eine Odyssee durch das Potal. Dort trifft er immer wieder auf Frauen, bei denen er Unterschlupf findet, die ihn aber nie zur Ruhe kommen lassen, und immer ist es die Erinnerung an Irma, die ihn weitervagabundieren lässt. Aldo, so sein Name, ist eine tragische Figur, die wohl figurativ für irgendetwas steht - ich bin mir nur nicht sicher für was. In gewisser Weise ist er eine Umkehr von der Vielzahl tragischer Frauengestalten in der westlichen Kultur, die von ihren Männern verlassen werden, und dann umherstreifen, aber eigentlich keinen Sinn mehr im Leben sehen (dass er seine Tochter im Schlepptau hat, passt hier sehr gut ins Bild). Andererseits, ergebe sich eine interessante Deutung aus dem Umstand, dass er nie einen Abschluss mit Irma sucht, und so ewig von ihr verfolgt wird, er also sein eigenes Urteil schreibt. Die starken Frauen bei denen er Unterschlupf findet sind aber auf jeden Fall, eine nette Abwechslung in der Filmgeschichte. Vor allem die Tankstellenbesitzerin Virginia, die ihren Hof aufgeben musste als ihr Mann starb und nun mit ihrem halb-senilen Vater (bester Charakter des Films - ein linker Klassenkämpfer, der anscheinend nicht mehr alle Tassen im Schrank hat) eine Tankstelle betreibt, sagte mir sehr zu. Ich vermute Antonioni hat bessere Filme gemacht, als die beiden die ich bis jetzt gesehen hab (L'Eclisse und Il Grido), und mein Interesse ist auf jeden Fall geweckt (etwas dass ich nie vermutet hätte bevor ich die beiden Filme gesehen hab). See more 04/03/2012 Very gray and desolate. What I liked about this film was the strange glimmer of hope present throughout Aldo's journey despite such despair.
