Wesley Morris Grantland The conceit is old-fashioned: hey, people falling in love long-distance! But the modern renovation confers a mild obnoxiousness. Apr 17, 2014 Full Review Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Like the film itself, Kakkar and Pastides are lively, adorable and thoroughly winning. Apr 17, 2014 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com As easy as it is to like Hank and Asha, it's impossible to look past the many screenwriting and filmmaking flaws of the film about them. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 11, 2014 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com While many filmmakers have tackled the long-distance relationship storyline, few have gotten it done as satisfyingly as first-time filmmaker James E. Duff. Rated: 3.0/4.0 Sep 10, 2020 Full Review Mae Abdulbaki Punch Drunk Critics It's heartwarming and very lovable in a way a lot of romantic comedies can only dream of being. Rated: 4/5 Aug 14, 2018 Full Review John Beifuss Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) The post-millennium indie film equivalent of an epistolary short story, the movie is not just a video-letter conversation but a calling card for its debuting co-directors, who demostrate a knack for crowd-pleasing instincts even on a micro-budget. Daniel G Whimsical brief movie (just a bit over 1 hour) that makes the best of a video-messaging interaction of two talented cinema-students from two very different cultures. Lovely cinematography, well-chosen protagonists, and it was just the right running time - no need to stretch out the conclusion. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/26/22 Full Review Audience Member This is a fascinating movie. I dont know why it has so low ranking here at @RT but being an Indian, I could totally related to Asha's plight with Arranged marriage and having lived with an american roommate, I know this is a true story for Hank too and if it is not, I wouldln't mind being wrong. This is a great movie with great direction and video editing. I hope you guys make it together and make it big if this is real story :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Hank and Asha's video penpal friendship starts off enchanting as hell, but the sweet yet staid gimmick eventually commits storytelling suicide. The entire movie is told in back and forth video diaries, and at no point does the narrative structure break into real time or real exigence. By the middle-end, the previously low-stakes conflict blows up into go-to cultural misunderstanding and an unsatisfying, open-ended ending. Mahira Kakkar is doe-eyed and beguiling as Asha, an Indian film student studying in Prague, and frankly, her letters are livelier and more interesting than Hank's. Andrew Pastides is fine as Hank, but both actor and character rub me the wrong way. Perhaps it's the glassy blue eyes and the self-deprecating mien that projects a Nice Guy sensitivity but actually belies the garden-variety narcissist underneath who prides himself on being such a Nice Guy. I just had to groan and laugh at that vociferous letter in which he bellows at Asha to reject her arranged marriage because he understands her more than her fiancée does (presumably). Really? What does he truly understand about her or her culture? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member What an adorable movie. Though never on the screen together at the same time, these two leads have tremendous chemistry. The whole film takes place in video messages from one to another and it is edited nicely and flows well. The writing is great as well and I loved it! I wish more people would see this movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Engaging , entertaining, well written, produced and directed! See it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Wonderful story of a romance in a modern, internet age. Well shot and well told!
