Homunculus delivers an interesting premise that I think makes some solid observations about trauma, how it can linger longer than we realize, and what the costs of dealing with it can be. Go to Full Review

"An attempt to offer something fresh to the horror-table, but one that, sadly, fails to blends its pleasing parts into a whole that truly engages and pleases the spectator." Go to Full Review
Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse 07/18/2021
"Homunculus" has some good points, but Takashi Shimizu is definitely past his prime, the adaptation is faulty once more, and the SFX and Go Ayano are not enough to salvage a movie that ends up aggressively mediocre. Go to Full Review

Aluna U Sep 26 Homunculus presents a visually compelling and emotionally intense psychological thriller, supported by strong performances and a unique concept rooted in experimental neurosurgery. While the film delivers striking plot twists and an intriguing opening, it leaves several critical story elements underexplored—such as the mysterious homeless man’s influence on Nokoshi and Ito’s unclear motives behind his obsession. For viewers unfamiliar with the original manga, these gaps may cause confusion, yet the film remains a thought-provoking experience with a bold and eerie atmosphere. See more Cinna B 07/30/2023 An absolutely terrible movie. Poorly written characters, a plot that progresses agonizingly slow in the first half but then desperately rushes to shoehorn in a bunch of different plot points in the second half, a main character that violated a teenage girl in order to "fix" her... This is abhorrent. It's so boring, and the few scenes that actually catch your attention are unnecessary or do not make sense in reference to the rest of the storyline at all. Watching this movie was a nauseating experience. If you're thinking about watching it, don't. This is not worth your time. See more Heidi L 04/04/2023 Right smack in the movie is a sexual assault and I can't for the life of me understand how the protagonist is thought to be doing this in order to save the victim. It's sickening. See more 02/24/2022 As someone who didn't read the manga, I really liked this movie. The plot was solid, cinematography perfectly captured the mood ( minus the SFX), and acting held up. My only gripe would be the devolpment in some of the characters was a little shady, with the main character doing some bad stuff with it being presented positively. Nota: 8 See more Read all reviews
