Audience Member Stanley Kwan's adaptation of Eileen Chang's original short story is a continuation of themes already suggested in the director's earlier movies, investigating the opposition between personal desire and social convention, with characteristically splendid cinematography by Christopher Doyle. In Red Rose, White Rose, both male and female are described as trapped in their official roles, giving in to convention and tradition, and the institution of marriage is percieved a prison sentence for both parts. Deeply melancholic and downbeat, with a haunting, almost sacred, musical score. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Liked the slow mode, which kept reminding me of In the Mood for Love and the attention to light and shadows. But there is so much attention to creating the right mood that this is all the movie is left with: a mood, and a lack of depth. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Moody it was. Good art direction as ever seen in any other Stanley Kwan's periodic pieces. Meantime, lukewarm as any other Art House movies too however. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Only Eileen Chang could deliver such a tempting message through a brilliant scene, in her novel -- Red Rose asking Zhenbao to put peanut butter on bread for her. To be hoest, I didn't feel sad when Zhenbao finally cried in the end. He deserves it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Very good shooting... good adapted story... Joan Chen acts well.... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member famous novel, infamous movie, not so bad actually, and not so good either Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
