Paul Chambers Movie Chambers Calling all monsters! Universal trots most of them out for this sequel to "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man." And, the results were slightly better than the 1943 effort. Joel H House of Frankenstein is an attempt to stick a handful of classic Universal monsters into the same movie, and it works all right. The title feels a little misleading, though, as Frankenstein’s creature is not the primary focus of this story. This is mostly about Dr. Gustav Niemann (Boris Karloff), Count Dracula (John Carradine), and The Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.). It’s also odd to see Karloff acting opposite Frankenstein instead of being Frankenstein. However, despite the cheesy visual effects, melodramatic acting, and the somewhat ridiculous storyline, I still enjoyed my visit at House of Frankenstein. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/01/24 Full Review Andrew L The Avengers of The Universal Studios Classic Monster Movie Cinematic Universe is worse than Justice League. Karloff's acting carries the whole movie as he plays a mad scientist obsessed with Frankenstein and his monster. The concept of making a movie that showcases all of The Universal Studios Classic Monsters is excellent but the film is pretty pathetic mainly because the plot isn't that great. "House of Dracula" has a better plot, and could have used Karloff's acting to save it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review CodyZamboni Z Watchable, but not very thrilling. Dracula makes a quick exit, and there's too much time spent on Igor's annoying subplot of unrequited love for a gypsy girl. Lon Chaney Jr looks bored, Frankenstein's monster makes a way too brief appearance. On the plus side, filmmakers stage some cool looking rainstorms, foggy forest sets that are set on fire, with the flames really close to the actors, and an electrical Frankenstein reanimation. I wanted to see the Univeral monsters in a battle royale, but movie doesn't really give that. Too bad. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review Ted B Easily the worst of the Universal monster collection films. All the usual suspects appear, but the only original character is the 'Wolfman,' played by Lon Chaney Jr. Boris Karloff was featured in the movie but played a mad scientist rather than the Frankenstein monster. John Carradine as Dracula and Glenn Strange as the Frankenstein monster bring experience from their previous horror roles. But they just weren't up to the standards of the original actors in those roles. I sort of grew up with these movies, so I can watch them even when the quality is not totally there. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/24 Full Review C Riley H The movie is not very good. But Karloff is the screen's centerpiece and makes this very much worth a watch. Imagine bringing all of the monsters together for a murder-filled romp. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/12/24 Full Review Mike W Poor in all aspects!
