Edward Guthmann San Francisco Chronicle Adapted from E.M. Forster's novel of human connections and follies, this newest film from the James Ivory / Ishmail Merchant / Ruth Prower Jhabvala team is close to flawless. Rated: 4/4 Jan 11, 2023 Full Review Jeff Menell Hollywood Reporter From start to finish, Howards End is a sumptuous visual delight. But the beauty of this film is far more than skin deep. Mar 5, 2020 Full Review Lizzie Francke Sight & Sound A more troubling and rigorous inquest into a bygone era than usual. Deborah Fain One of best films ever made. Definitely best film of a book. Amazes me 1whenever I see it!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/25/24 Full Review Audience Member What an absolute nonsense. There are so many holes in this story that I can’t even start describing what I did not like. Nothing made sense but especially the ending was really terrible. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review Jonathan M I adore the films of Merchant Ivory, and the collaborative efforts of the team reached new heights with this E. M. Forster adaptation. It should have taken home the Oscar for "Best Picture" that year. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/23/24 Full Review Zinjx W Another one from the Merchant/Ivory assembly line. An incredibly fine ensemble has been put together. Not on par with "Rest of the Day" Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/07/24 Full Review Blu B A Classic Period Drama. It's really well done all around with standout performances by Hopkins & Thompson who are really good together. Solid musical score but I wish it was a bit more memorable like everything else is. The setting is very memorable, great camerawork and production value all around, and everything pops in this nicely. This is a bit on the slow side throughout but especially the first 30 minutes or so takes a little while to get going. All the story lines do come together in the end but it defintely can be a little hard to keep track of things especially in the start when it's not clear who the focus is as it sets everything up. Once Thompson becomes the main focus and the will happens it takes a big step up in quality and focus. That being said there are things like her sister that I did lose track of because it was a little hard to follow but the family drama and direction more than made up for it. As with all period piece drama/romances like this even though this is really well done it isn't necessarily for everyone. The dialouge is modern enough where you really won't have any problem following the main beats. If your a big fan of any actors in this, the director, or period peice dramas than give this a watch for sure. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Christian K Predictably good scenery and performances, but the story on a whole offers nothing for me.
