Orphaned and alone except for an uncle, Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield) lives in the walls of a train station in 1930s Paris. Hugo's job is to oil and maintain the station's clocks, but to him, his more important task is to protect a broken automaton and notebook left to him by his late father (Jude Law). Accompanied by the goddaughter (Chloë Grace Moretz) of an embittered toy merchant (Ben Kingsley), Hugo embarks on a quest to solve the mystery of the automaton and find a place he can call home.

Critics Consensus

Hugo is an extravagant, elegant fantasy with an innocence lacking in many modern kids' movies, and one that emanates an unabashed love for the magic of cinema.

The first thing to say... is that it is a visual wonder... But the second thing to say is nothing else is as exciting as the look of it and if there is a third thing it is this: Hugo himself is rather boringly bland and I didn't much care for him. Go to Full Review

It is a miraculous achievement that, during this home stretch, engages on levels and in ways few other films can admit to, and as such makes a decided case to be considered as one of the year's finest achievements. Go to Full Review

Being a hardcore cinephile (like Scorsese) might add a layer of enjoyment, but it certainly isn't a prerequisite for walking in the door. A sense of wonder, however, is. Go to Full Review

Marit Risto F Nov 25 It's Paris, yes? Why do they speak English? I can enjoy it despite this flop though, but See more Arthur D Oct 19 Hugo was a delightful film with a straightforward plot and outstanding performances—perfect for a cozy Saturday night with the family. See more Daniel C Sep 11 Horrible acting and terrible actors and plot. See more Gareth v Aug 10 A beautifully crafted, tender adventure that doubles as a celebration of film history. See more Mate P Jul 27 Hugo is about so many different things, while looking gorgeous at all times. In the beginning I thought this movie would be an Oliver Twist kind of story. Then as it went it shifted into an underdog success story, but by the end it became a tale about cinema and forgotten heroes. This is called Absolute Cinema. On the other hand this is a story for children, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I would've 6-7 years ago. The dialogues are pretty good, there are some really funny moments too as well as tense ones. The directing is obviously amazing with this fairy tale-like (Spielbergy) cinematography. The editing is gorgeous and the pacing is good. The production design is amazing, but looking back this movie could've used even more practicality, because some of the CGI shots didn't age well. The casting in hindsight is absolutely incredible. Ben Kingsley's performance was my absolute favourite and when I think of him now I always want to say Trevor Slattery :) Hugo is probably a little overrated by the critics and The Academy, but on the other hand people underrate it very much. It's Absolute Cinema. See more Jun 29 A truly entertaining and emotional rewarding movie! I kept thinking about the movie for days even months. Me and my family were really moved by this film and it also holds a special place in my heart. See more Read all reviews
