      Critics Consensus

Hugo is an extravagant, elegant fantasy with an innocence lacking in many modern kids' movies, and one that emanates an unabashed love for the magic of cinema.

Teddy B Martin Scorsese's love for the magic of early cinema is very evident and shows it with wonderful visual flair, but the film could do without the mystery aspect, which it seems to forget about the further the film goes on. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review Benjamin H Exciting, interesting and presenting a transportative and fantastical story, Hugo has some structural issues and its excessive nature could have been toned down, but nonetheless this film shows a level of care and heart that can be an inspiration for many other films and is as always marvellously directed by Martin Scorsese. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/24 Full Review Stephen W For an audience that appreciates gentle, careful, loving film making - by a director at the zenith of his skill - Hugo is unsurpassed. For the audience that just wants cheap thrills or to be taken roughly from behind- give it a miss. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/03/24 Full Review Olive M I loved this movie. It seemed to be written and directed by people who hadn't lost sight of their childhood. Asa Butterfield was superb as Hugo and Ben Kingsley as the rediscovered Méliès, an illusionist from the past. It was imaginative, original and enchanting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/29/23 Full Review Nadyezhda L For many years I would spend most Sundays with my sister and aging father having dinner and watching a movie. When this film came to video I rented it because the reviews suggested my father might like it. They both protested because they knew nothing about the movie, wanting to watch a cozy mystery instead. I ignored their protests. What happened was a marvelous evening of all of us enjoying the movie, then talking about France, clocks, silent films, and a whole lot more. Hugo was such a pleasure to watch that my sister and father did not question my choice of movies after that lovely evening. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/23/23 Full Review Kevin D I along with my twelve year old daughter found this film to be wonderful. We look forward to watching it again soon with the rest of the family. Deborah Ross The Spectator The first thing to say... is that it is a visual wonder... But the second thing to say is nothing else is as exciting as the look of it and if there is a third thing it is this: Hugo himself is rather boringly bland and I didn't much care for him. Aug 31, 2018 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com It is a miraculous achievement that, during this home stretch, engages on levels and in ways few other films can admit to, and as such makes a decided case to be considered as one of the year's finest achievements. Rated: 3.5/4 Jan 27, 2012 Full Review Christy Lemire Associated Press Being a hardcore cinephile (like Scorsese) might add a layer of enjoyment, but it certainly isn't a prerequisite for walking in the door. A sense of wonder, however, is. Jan 3, 2012 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand Befitting such an impassioned tribute to the glories of early cinema and the creators of yesteryear wonders, it is a cinematic playground of technique and color and imagination, as well as an affectionate childhood adventure. Oct 6, 2023 Full Review Danilo Castro Next Best Picture The final act of “Hugo,” which recounts Méliès’ fall from grace and culminates with the rediscovery of his work, is some of the most heartwarming material in the entire Scorsese canon. Rated: 8/10 Aug 31, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Hugo is a work steeped in cinema lore, drunk on the fumes of a bygone era yet canny enough to channel its nostalgia through modern innovations.
