A former law professor turned special prosecutor, John Lindsay (Edward G. Robinson) volunteers his services to the government to rid a city of its criminal underworld and racketeering problem. The roots of corruption run so deep, though, that even his own office ends up on the mob's payroll, and he turns to his law students for help. With his young assistants, he turns the city, and city hall, upside down to root out the gangsters, even when the mob makes him a marked man.

Ann Ross Maclean's Magazine It's all fairly familiar, but the story takes so many hairpin turns and moves at such a breakneck speed that it's highly exciting entertainment. Audience Member Edward G. Robinson is the good guy for a change in this routine crime drama; best scene has Robinson and Wendy Barrie dancing "The Big Apple." Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Edward G. Robinson stars as a law professor who agrees to head a task force fighting extortion rackets. Only after taking the job does he realize that the entire system he's part of is set up to make sure he can't succeed. It's good to see Robinson move away from a steady stream of tough guy roles and move to the other side of the law, but this is an awfully lightweight film pretty much propped up by him and some reliable character actors (Otto Kruger and Marc Lawrence as the principal heavies).
