Audience Member With a stellar cast of Kretschmann, Farmiga, Brühl and Malkovich, you would expect the film to at least be serviceable, which it is and then some. Since this is based on a true story, it makes the film even more interesting. So this film isn't a Hollywood product put together to merely titillate and entertain, that must be kept in mind. And we know, it's taking place after the war has concluded, for how could Russians and Germans be dancing together at parties? Unheard of during wartime. But we also know that the film's focus is on the weeding out the SS officers to bring war criminals to justice. It sounds like a close and shut case, but when you've got humans who have been drained of their humanity, even deprived of ever seen family again, what transpires among the weak and weary is not that unexpected. For, after all, being a soldier sucks, and humans just want to hear music again, drink wine, and find love again. It is this very element, this very natural, human weakness that complicates the story and makes this film a most interesting commentary on the juxtaposition of the harsh, cold, brutal war and warm, feeling, wanting humans. Well done. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member What's in the note?!?! This movie kept my interest but really would have liked to know what the note said. It seemed like an abrupt ending. By her not reading the note I took out of it that she was choosing her husband. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member For a blink and you'll miss it romantic storyline amongst the POW fact based story, I enjoyed it, and war movies of that slower more dramatic pace don't usually do it for me but there was just something about this that after 11 years was worth getting around to seeing! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Not sure how this got a user score of 35%, this film shows that your enemy is not necessarily your enemy. It is a film about trust and its consequences. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Acting was solid but the plot was weak. The bleak scenery was the best part of this film as it was filmed on location in Russia itself. The misery and despair of the time period are perfectly captured but there's very little emotion to be felt and not enough focus on one strong plot-line. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member The film has a very decent cast and along with some good acting, costumes, sets and cinematography manages to bring forth a good looking film. While this may be based on true events, I found it odd that a bunch of German POWs wouldn't try to escape considering they outnumbered the staff 6 to 1 and weren't often guarded by more than a single firearm. More people died in this film from not escaping than probably would have from simply rushing the few guards (and that's if you tried it with all the staff present). In the end, it's the story that kills this film. It has very good intentions and tries hard but doesn't quite succeed in producing a story with enough forward moving drama. With a mish mash of events and characters and little direction, the films ends up leaving the viewer wondering who they're supposed to be cheering for. Robert Roten Laramie Movie Scope The scattershot story never builds dramatic momentum, but it does take some interesting twists and turns and it does have an air of authenticity. Rated: B May 23, 2009 Full Review Read all reviews
