Hilarious fun and musical Watch it with your friends or family to double the fun Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review mirza m Honestly I didn't expect much from this film, from the trailers it looked like a mash of Bollywood films like No Entry (2005) & the very enjoyable Hangover series with a star cast I knew nothing about. Well frankly haven seeing only four Pakistani films my whole life - Khuda Ke Liye (2007), Bol (2011), Waar (2013) & Karachi se Lahore (2015), with the latter being quite a deranged experience, I decided to give this film a chance based on couple of my friend's recommendations, the overall audience reaction & the box office performance (as if now its stands as the highest grossing film in Pakistan). And boy was I surprised! The film surpassed all my expectations with flying colors, while the film did remind me of the very well timed humor seen in early comedy films by director David Dhawan, & many other films revolving around the same theme, this film manages to bring its own charm turning this film, which could have been very mediocre, into something very high on an entertainment level. Usually in a film with a lot of characters, one way or the other someone gets ignored but that wasn’t the case here. Each & every character got the time needed to establish grounds for itself & it never felt like someone lost the purpose in the course of story-telling. All the characters were relevant in the story & they needed to be there to complete the whole picture. I must say, I loved how each & every character was assigned to elaborate the cliched flavor of comedy but in a very good way & I must say they all did a wonderful job. The comedy material used in the film is highly original and entertaining thanks to the writer Vasay Chaudhry (who also stars as my favorite character of the film). I literally laughed out loud throughout the film. I actually appreciated the song breaks so I could catch my breath. Director Nadeem Baig does a very good job by holding everything together, getting the best out of the actors and making sure the movie gets a grand scale, and is smoothly paced. And yes, this one looks, walks and talks like a film, with no drama hangover whatsoever in sight. On paper the plot is nothing to write home about – three guys are fed up of their hen-pecked lives and then one day a long lost bachelor friend shows up with an idea that turns everybody’s life upside down – but it is Vasay Chaudhry’s patented witty, razor sharp writing that holds an otherwise hackneyed story line together. His humor is intelligent and funny and the inside jokes are spot on. Most importantly, the comedy, though raunchy in places, is not crude and neither is it the loud and slapstick kind of stuff that is being passed off as comedy these days. The story follows Sherry (Humayun Saeed) a USA returned, unmarried divorce lawyer who comes to visit his three childhood friends who are now married; 1) Saif (Hamza Ali Abbasi) is married to Kubra (Ayesha Khan). Saif is a young director turned Casanova who gets a kick start at his career because of the heavy financial support from his father in law yet believes in cheating on his wife as he thinks she is too dominating & doesn’t give him the space he deserves. 2) Sheikh (Vasay Chauhdry) is married to Gul (Sarwat Gillani). Sheikh is a very mediocre policeman who hardly has any achievements to his belt, because of which he gets looked down upon by his wife, a fierce Pathan lady who comes from a very well-reputed family. 3) Parvez (Ahmed Ali Butt) is married to Lubna (Uzma Khan). Parvez is miserably lonely because his wife is a workaholic woman & devotes her free time to their kids & her father only. After seeing the forlorn & bored faces of his friends Sherry comes up with a plan & eventually succeeds in tagging his friends along to Bangkok for a whole week by using a shopping spree technique & a made-up story about his fragile health as a bait to get permission from the ladies & that’s where the story begins. What I loved the most about this film is that they have blended so many flavors of humor in around 160 minutes of its run time, as a result when the end credits roll in, you have a big smile on your face.Yes, there are quite a lot of adult themed & dual meaning jokes in the movie which I feel could have easily been avoided as they had perfectly extracted humor out of Punjabi, Pushto, politics, current happenings of social media, Bollywood & Pakistani & Bollywood celebrities, which were absolutely spot on & served the purpose of making this movie a great entertainer without the need of relying on any bold content. References like ‘piece bara tight hai’, ‘CIA agent’, ‘tabdeeli aa nahi rahi, tabdeeli aa gai hai’ were used so aptly that you actually easily relate to each & everything because it looks like it has been derived out of the regular conversations that you have on daily basis. While all this is well and good, it is not like the film is not without faults. The biggest drawback, to my mind is the music. Apart from a couple of songs here & there not much that stays with you & at times just end up adding to the run time, especially the two Humayun Saeed - Sohai Ali Abro pre wedding songs. The film also has a couple of awkward product placement scenes. The one & only fight sequence seemed to have been edited haphazardly. I guess one would call Humayun Saeed the hero of this film, as his character propels the story and he is good no doubt, but in real the film belongs to Vasay Chaudhry (also the writer of the film) and Ahmed Ali Butt – these two are absolutely hilarious. The pair have some of the best lines in the movie and their comic timing is spot on. Hamza Ali Abbasi makes a good impression as well. Ismail Tara is an absolute delight as the Don, Javed Sheikh as always is fun to watch. The ladies frankly don't have much to do here, yet they shine in their roles, especially Sohai Ali Abro. Her character as the young social media maven is a brilliant critique of the self-obsessed society we live in these days. Bushra Ansari, Mehwish Hayat, Uzma Khan, Sarwat Gillani & Ayesha Khan play their parts well. On the whole, 'Jawani Phir Nahi Ani' is a very enjoyable 'keep your brains at home' kind of comedy, which works due to its exceptional writing & comic timing. Go watch this with an open mind and take it as it is: a comedy film. The film may seem more suited for a Pakistani audience as a lot of jokes and one liners are directed towards the people of Pakistan, yet as a non-Pakistani myself, I do highly recommended it to every one as it has something for everyone to laugh about.
