Nick Schager The Daily Beast A testament to the spirit of exploration and innovation. Moreover, it's a sweet and subtly profound portrait of the universal desire for something more. Feb 2, 2021 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal Plays out like a Chopin prelude -- short, sweet, gem-like, satisfying. Aug 20, 2020 Full Review Brian Costello Common Sense Media Short docu explores the need to connect; mature themes. Rated: 3/5 Aug 28, 2020 Full Review Anna Menta Decider Despite its short length, there's a lot packed into this thoughtful little film-not so much about aliens, but about a very earthly desire for connection. Aug 24, 2020 Full Review John Serba Decider A little sliver of humanity that'll give you a lot of hope. Aug 21, 2020 Full Review Maria Sherman The Muse/Jezebel Distractions can be therapeutic and asking questions about the unknown an exercise in critical thinking. The Netflix documentary short John Was Trying to Contact Aliens makes that case in a surprising and evocative way. Aug 21, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

A S This short film should have been shorter, as in it should not exist. That was 16 minutes of depressive torture, my soul left my body at the 8th minute and went to visit the aliens John was looking for, to inform them never to talk to John… When my soul returned, it told me secrets of the aliens, that they heard of johns misfortune and provided him with a boyfriend… kind of like when a wife wants a baby, and a husband substitutes with a dog….. They did not want to talk with John, and still don’t… I do not recommend this mini doco of trapped sadness and desperation of belonging to any beings of this world or any other… please try and find something else John… Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Christie M It's a cute and sweet tale of a man, and his quest to find aliens. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/23 Full Review Audience Member A really beautiful and succinct little documentary. It's a wonderful reminder of how fulfilling being oneself can be and how there's hope for unique individuals out there doing their own thing and staying curious. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Basically the documentary says he built a radio station in his home and trys to talk to aliens. That's it . The whole thing is 16 minutes long. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Warm, touching story about a lonely, isolated, depressed gay dude with two passions: contact aliens and find himself a same-sex partner. Kudos to the filmmakers for all the heart and originality in this picture. Yet, I was puzzled. The film is billed as a Netflix documentary, but it's so short, it feels like it's just getting off the ground when it's over. Also, would have been far more satisfying if there were a real story here. On one hand, he's a selfless, self-taught scientist, but -- despite the thousands of reported alien sightings these days -- he never once contacted any himself. On a side note, he did find love. Cool -- you can't help being happy for them. But, for me, it doesn't amount to a compelling story. Can't imagine such high ratings here if the lonely geek happened to be a lonely hetero. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Totally unexpected turn and really great short story that will stick with you regardless of your position on the subject.
