Audience Member Decent acting and setting. Interesting premise. But there is nothing in this film that hasn't been done better in other martial arts movies. And the poor CGI effects actually become a distraction. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Weird, beautiful, raw, naive and folksy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member An ex-ninja on the run from his clan befriends a fisherman hoping to leave his former life behind him and enjoy a simple life, but his past inevitably catches up with him with violent consequences. Kamui is an amusingly oddball chop-socky martial arts film based on a popular Japanese manga. It captures the spirit of the comic strip with plenty of high kicking, wire flying violence as people bounce all over the screen dispatching pointy death on nearly everyone they meet. It is rather episodic and the story takes some bemusing turns (particularly when it turns into a Kung Fu version of Jaws!) but its sheer bizarreness acts to keep the audience interested as you never quite know what's going to happen next. Some of the visual effects are a little ropey and subtlety is most definitely left at the door, but it's an entertainingly strange addition to the genre that's not as good as Azumi, but better than Azumi 2. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Nice movie that gives insight into fishing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I didn;t know 'L' could fly......or fish....or do magic tricks! what a mess of a film.....At one point a villager says 'What's going on?'.....i'd like to know too. 'Kamui gaiden' or 'Kamui: The Lone Ninja' - is based on the popular Manga. Which might account for the rather random first twenty minutes... ( It starts off really badly, looking like a 1970's marshal arts) Then there's some silly tree jumping (Kenichi Matsuyama would have won in Death Note if he could jump/ fly like this). Then we have a very nice scene by the river side.....poor horse though. Some of this film has great potential.... When he reaches the fishing village the story and pace take a huge turn, slowing down to fit the slow life of the villagers. Some of the scenary is stunning now (a far cry from the beginning of the film)..... and we now have a good story and pretty good film. Kenichi's fight at the end! LOL. Funny seeing him as a Ninja! This was too interesting too miss if you are a Matsuyama fan. But if you're looking for a true genius fighting film try 'Musa, The Warrior' instead.
