Critics Consensus

While nostalgic fans may view it through rose-Krullered glasses, this would-be sci-fi epic is painfully derivative.

ryan b Not sure why the ratings are so low, it's a fun adventure movie that is a mix a fantasy and sci-fi. You have a pretty good cast, 80s special effects and sets which of course give it a personality of it's own. It's a fun watch, family friendly and a very young Liam Nelson lol. If you haven't seen it you should at least give it a go. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/02/25 Full Review Andrew R It's good groin grabbingly good Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/11/25 Full Review Audience Member *Krull* (1983) is a charming blend of sci-fi and fantasy that wears its heart on its sleeve. With sweeping landscapes, a memorable cast of quirky, lovable characters, and a sense of adventure that's both earnest and imaginative, it's a nostalgic gem. Sure, it's a bit dated—but that only adds to its unique, timeless magic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/25/25 Full Review Rebekah D One of my favorite movies of all time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/07/25 Full Review CodyZamboni Z As bad as I remember when I first saw it back in 1983, Boring, no story, no characters, lousy fx, lousy action, Only some stunning location photography and some nice art design offer some merit. And was nice seeing young Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane, Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Mark F One of those "guilty pleasure" movies but more pleasure and less guilt. Sure it's a bit cheesy, the special effects haven't aged well and the plot was unoriginal and generic even when it was made. However, it has a great cast, and all of them have their hearts in it. The production values are solid - especially some of the sets and visuals (it had a big budget for its time). The script is charming and lyrical, and the soundtrack is wonderful (one of James Horner's best IMO). In short there's much to enjoy here and as 80s fantasy movies go this for me is the superior effort to the similar but bigger and brasher 'Willow' (also scored by James Horner but less enthusiastically I would say).
