Newly divorced Jane Hardy (Trish Van Devere) decides to spend the summer in a home given to her by her dead aunt. On the way there, she has a dangerous encounter with an old hearse, and it doesn't take her long to discover that the house itself is haunted. It seems that the aunt was dabbling in the occult while she was alive. When Jane meets charming local Tom Sullivan (David Gautreaux), she is attracted to him, and desire overshadows signs that he may be the ghost of her dead aunt's lover.

Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The events in this movie happen because they have happened in other horror movies and seemed like a good idea at the time. We know better. Rated: 0.5/4 Jan 8, 2008 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills ...escapist sillinesses... Sep 22, 2023 Full Review Bobby Dupea Starburst The film is, basically, no more than the usual cheap-budget horror-fantasy affair, except to say... it's well enough scripted, shot, directed and more stunted than special-effected. Jul 26, 2022 Full Review TV Guide A pretty dull affair. Rated: 1.5/4 Jan 8, 2008 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member The ending could've been a lot better but it's still atmospheric and eerie which make it successful in it's own right. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review andy f If you'd rented this on video in the 1980s for your Friday or Saturday night's entertainment you might have been semi-pleased. The Hearse is a throwback to those days and fortunately I have a soft spot for that type of film. Despite the film's many flaws it delivers one or two genuine scares - so it is far from all bad. Recommended for 2am viewing if like me you love a bit of 70s and 80s US horror. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member "Christine" is the creme de la creme of killer car flicks. "The Car" is an orgy of badness just waiting to be enjoyed by MSTies. "Kildozer" isn't technically a car, so it doesn't count. But THIS film is by far the least scary movie about possessed automobiles ever made. You'll fall asleep through it, and even if you're wide awake, the whole thing doesn't make any sense anyway if you sit down and think about it. Trish Van Devere, who never escaped from under the shadow of her famous husband, is as wooden and lifeless as a coffin The Hearse would haul to the graveyard and drop in the dirt-something I recommend you do with this movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Though "The Hearse" wallows in typical ghost story cliches, it still manages to pack in some decently creepy moments and a sympathetic heroine in Trish Van Devere. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Not very exciting or memorable, the characters don't stand out from the crumby plot and the pacing dwindles on til the end. Typical elements and dull scenes throughout. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member A recently divorced woman who has just recovered from a nervous breakdown heads to a small town into a haunted house she inherited that has been vacant for over three decades. Average film that has been somewhat forgotten over the years. None of the horror elements here are original, I was actually more intrigued to find out if the high schooler from local hardware store could score with the much older Ms. Hardy while doing repairs around her house.
