Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member La prima versione cinematografica del musical di Kurt Weill e Ira Gershwin, malgrado il grande successo di pubblico, deluse profondamente sia i critici del tempo sia i molti fan della versione teatrale. In effetti del materiale originale rimane ben poco: la sceneggiatura fu pesantemente riscritta (in parte anche dal regista stesso che però non fu accreditato nei titoli di testa): vennero inserite una serie di scene in cui lo psicologo spiegava, in maniera un po' troppo didascalica, tutte le teorie psicanalitiche toccate dalla commedia (complesso di Edipo, transfert, lapsus freudiani e via discorrendo), dando così maggiore importanza al personaggio dello psicanalista. Dei tre sogni rappresentati in forma di mini-opera, per usare una definizione data da Weill stesso, rimane davvero ben poco: il primo si limita a pochi minuti, della canzone One Life to Live viene eseguito solo parte della prima strofa e del pezzo Girl of the Moment solo un ritornello. Il secondo sogno viene talmente modificato da renderlo quasi inutile: sono state eliminate praticamente tutte le canzoni che lo componevano, sostituite con l'insipida Suddenly it's Spring composta da Johnny Burke e Jimmy Van Heusen. Mentre del terzo sogno si salva la celeberrima The Saga of Jenny, da cui viene eliminata una sola strofa giudicata troppo osé, e gran parte del numero introduttivo, ma viene fatto un cambiamento che stravolge gran parte del sogno: la parte del ringmaster passa da Russell Paxton, il fotografo gay amico e confidente di Liza, a Randy Curtis, la star hollywoodiana innamorata della protagonista. Questo piccolo cambiamento influisce non poco sull'economia del racconto: difatti Russell perde totalmente il suo ruolo di mediatore fra Liza, donna dalla femminilità negata ma dal carattere forte, e tutti gli altri personaggi femminili, donne deboli ma piene di glamour e grazia. Ancora più incredibile è la totale assenza della canzone My Ship che nella versione teatrale costituiva il leitmotiv dell'opera e la chiave della guarigione della protagonista.
