      Critics Consensus

The Last Boy Scout is as explosive, silly, and fun as it does represent the decline of the buddy-cop genre.

Max N Awesome film! The Last Boyscout is Tony Scott's best movie without hesitation. Tony Scott is not one of the best directors and really overrated. But this is the number one reason why I give him credit. This is one of the best Bruce Willis movies, and one of the best action movies of the 90s. Great storyline, great action sequences, Bruce WIllis and Damon Wayons work very well together and have great chemistry. This movie is great. I did hear this movie got studio interference and Tony Scott hated it. Which is a bummer. I will say this movie is not perfect. None of his movies are. But he was still able to make this movie great. If they did interfere, then if they hadn't, then this movie would probably be even better. But it's still a great movie. The Last Boyscout will always be Tony Scott's best work. It's his best written film and his best directed film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review Thomas K Good old fashioned action-movie, that still lasts until today and makes still a lot of fun to watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/15/24 Full Review Jack O As much as I love Die Hard, I'm going to just tell you the details about The Last Boy Scout. This movie is very similar to Lethal Weapon and I can't believe that I haven't been reviewing all Lethal Weapon films. Including the scene where Darian, Joe's daughter watching it. While I was thinking about this recently I watched the opening credits from this and the guy who wrote the story and screenplay is Shane Black. He just wrote the screenplay for the Lethal Weapon films and now The Last Boy Scout. That is why the story is done twice. Why didn't I think of this before? What really surprised me is that it bombed at the box office which was crazy and aside from that I'm surprised that it had a cult following. So it's directed by Tony Scott and all I can see is the same location as Beverly Hill Cop and Beverly Hills Cop 2. The action scenes are awesome as usually like the ending where Joe and Jimmy heading to the football stadium to take down Marcone and Milo before they take down the president. This movie is awesome, well, not as good as the Lethal Weapon films and the Die Hard films which stars Bruce Willis but it's still awesome. So this buddy cop action flick will make you dance a jig and have Friday night's a great night for football. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/29/23 Full Review Gag G It works that's all that matters. I remember seeing this when it came out in 91 at a theater in the Toledo, Ohio. It still stands out against the endless supply of buddy films out there. It's definitely an above average movie. Consider it a piece of Hollywood history from 1991. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/23 Full Review Matt M Yeah pure man movie from my past. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Emilliano S Generic buddy cop tandem genre. I wish there's a lethal weapon cross over Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Michael Wilmington Los Angeles Times A story about lonely heroism in a sick age should be a little hipper to what’s really heroic and what’s really sick. Aug 4, 2023 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times When automobiles are not crashing, going over embankments or being blown up (the film's favorite mode of distressing a car), someone falls atop the rotors of a helicopter in mid-air. The body count is high. Aug 4, 2023 Full Review Jo Berry Empire Magazine It's very similar to Shane Black's previous scripts, but the action and the fast and funny one-liners almost make the film a five-star, must-see movie in the vein of Lethal Weapon and Die Hard. Rated: 3/5 Aug 4, 2023 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) A few big laughs, a lot of big explosions and a ripping climax to boot. Rated: 3/5 Aug 13, 2020 Full Review Vanessa Letts The Spectator Violent, chauvinist and funny, and I enjoyed it tremendously. Jul 25, 2018 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid It's a slick, dumb, exciting, implausible, surprising movie, told quickly and cleanly. Rated: 3/4 May 17, 2016 Full Review Read all reviews
