Matt Brunson Film Frenzy One’s enjoyment largely depends on how much one can appreciate the hypnotic visuals and narrative non sequitors and ignore the rambling and portentous (some would say pretentious) dialogue and stutter-step direction. william d French vampire hippies. If that sounds lame to you wait until you check out the story. At least there are some high quality breasts here, and I actually liked the guitar driven soundtrack. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed this movie for its strengths: cinemaphotography, lighting, and other visual aspects. I would classify this movie above soft core pornography, but there is no denying its resemblance, The plot is there, of sorts. Consistency is spotty, but I don't think that a cohesive story was Rollin's main objective. The dialog may have been more convincing in the original French, but I doubt it. The acting would be sub-standard for other movies, but actually works reasonably well with the tone of the movie. The dialog moves quickly at times, and I had to stop the movie to read the subtitles before they made way for the next. I have found that with subtitled works, to fully enjoy the whole experience you must often view the movie twice: once to read the dialog, and again to enjoy the visuals. Lighting and composition are very entertaining, with striking images. Most of the movie appears to be filmed at an actual medieval castle. Rollins obviously found a round room or two at his location - he has several scenes where the camera rotates to sweep the entire room. The few special effects that Rollins employed are probably the cheesiest aspect of this movie: he clearly did not have the budget to do any professional work and it shows. The vampires do not slowly fade in or out of a scene - one frame the grave is empty and the next frame the vampire is there. Also, if you observe the scene where Isolde descends into the fireplace, you can see her legs swinging slightly as she descends - a sure sign that she is being lowered at the end of a long rope. A fun diversion - costume watching. Rollins had several of his characters change costumes with virtually every shot. I had a lot of fun just seeing what outrageous outfit the 2 cousins were wearing for each scene. View this movie for its imagery and you should be pleasantly entertained. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member In mind of the year it was made, its quality of acting lends itself to the movie. About a couple who stop at a castle to visit long unseen family members and there so happens to be vampires there. The soundtrack is also quite fitting too. There's lots of nude women scenes and it does make you laugh at moments just at the complete cheesiness at points. But for horror fans who like old films it's definitely not scary moreso erotic at times but worth a watch once to see what it's about. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Because I've always been a fan of vampire stories and I like to experiment with different genres, I bought three Jean Rollin films. Even though this is - in my opinion - the best out of the three, I really don't get their appeal. For an erotic/porn film, the nudity is too scarce and tame. For a horror/scare film, there is too little suspense. For a drama, there is too little dramatic development. etc. Add this to the lack of a decent story line or decent acting and you really start wondering what the hell some of these reviewers are so excited about... They say Rollin is all about atmosphere, but I wonder what atmosphere they're talking about. I guess they're just talking about seeing naked women in a Gothic surrounding. Even as a former goth, that just doesn't to it for me! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie was impressive. Not based on thick plots or talented acting - The filming was really surreal, and almost psychedelic. It's actors/actresses weren't thought out good, and there were awkwardly placed dialogue with terrible sound effects beaming in the background. Other than the beautiful hypnotic main actress - the freakishly pale, skinny, tall, vampire woman (Where both the best). Some frightening highlights is when the vampire woman climbs out of the clock and abruptly opens the curtains behind the girls bed. Good job on those shockers! Didn't expect such sudden frights thrown into a slow paced film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Slow-moving and ridiculous.
