Em uma pequena vila italiana, durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, as órfãs de um colégio interno no dia de Natal recebem pedidos de oração, em troca os moradores dão dinheiro ou comida para o colégio. Neste dia, uma senhora muito rica pede orações para o seu namorado que a estaria traindo. Ela então entrega um enorme bolo feito com 70 ovos. Neste curta, temos um pequena história de Natal moderna, onde se discute religião, moral, guerra, desperdício. Os tempos são difíceis para todos. Apesar do grande elenco infantil, o destaque é a pequena Melissa Falasconi que interpreta Serafina, a menina que por causa das suas atitudes inocentes sofre um pouco mais nas mãos da Madre Superiora. É ela que troca a estação do rádio de um de notícias da guerra por uma música divertida, mas com uma letra sugestiva, que gera punição às meninas. A crítica à Igreja é forte, mostrando o apoio dela ao governo fascista e a figura da Madre Superiora que manipula a todos para punir segundo a sua moral ou alcançar os seus intentos, acaba descobrindo em Serafina, um obstáculo para os seus intentos. A igreja também é criticada na cena em que os moradores pedem orações e trazem presentes às órfãs e as freiras julgam as doações, independente da situação financeira da família. Uma última crítica está na figura da amante que traz o bolo cerne do filme. Além do bolo ser um exemplo de exagero por levar 70 ovos em uma época difícil para todos, é um pedido egoísta pois enquanto as outras famílias pedem o retorno dos seus familiares vivos da guerra, ela quer que o amante retorne para ela e esqueça a sua família. O curta é uma deliciosa história natalina, com um toque de fantasia, ao mesmo tempo que apresenta a dura realidade da época, mas com uma pequena licão de moral: a solidariedade que importa.
