plays out like a reimagining of The Wicker Man, although that film’s uptight male Christian copper has become a laid-back female vicar whose maternal status challenges the original’s patriarchal values. Go to Full Review

Lord of Misrule can’t fully escape the trappings established by quintessential folk horror films like The Wicker Man, but Bell gives it his all to subvert many of the tropes and make it entertaining. Go to Full Review

Ultimately, it's a good entertainment option, especially for those who like stories that confront paganism with Christianity, but it's hardly a film that will mark you for life. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

See more Claudio C @Claudio666 Jun 27 Lord of Misrule (2023) Disappointing British/Irish Horror Movie (11,789 – 26 Jun 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In the rural village of Berrow, the vicar Rebecca “Becca” Holland (Tuppence Middleton) has recently arrived with her husband Henry Holland (Matt Stokoe) and their daughter Grace Holland (Evie Templeton) to assume the parish church. The girl is chosen to be the “Harvest Angel” in the harvest festival that praises the pagan god Gallowgog to protect their plantation. Out of the blue, Grace disappears in the woods and the police and the residents organize a search party to look for her. But when Becca confronts the local Jocelyn Abney (Ralph Ineson), she suspects that he daughter was abducted by people that worship Gallowgog and unravels secrets of the villagers. “Lord of Misrule” (2023) is a disappointing British/Irish horror movie directed by William Brent Bell. It is a pity, since British and Irish folklores are rich, but the screenplay and the story are very poor. From the beginning the viewer knows who abducted Grace and the story does not surprise anybody. There are several other movies with similar stories, like "The Wicker Man" (1973). In addition, the conclusion is silly and not good. My vote is five. While many of the cliches of the genre are on full display here, everything is done to a high standard. The outsider family from the city coming into the secretive small British village, hints of sinister rites and pagan traditions, conflict between modernity and ancient ways, Christian and pagan religions, and violence churning below the surface of idyllic country life. The boss monster was quite effective, revealing just enough to be disturbing but not so much as to descend into the ridiculous as many films do in this situation. The ending was a bit weak, but otherwise this is a worthy entry in the folk horror genre. See more Read all reviews
