Seruschka M A Cinematic Shipwreck Rating: 0/5 "Mermaid Down" is an absolute disaster of a film, a chaotic mess that manages to be both boring and infuriating at the same time. It takes a promising premise— a mermaid captured by fishermen and thrown into an asylum— and drowns it in incoherent storytelling, horrendous acting, and direction so amateurish it feels like a film school dropout's failed thesis project. The Script: An Incomprehensible Train Wreck The writing is an unfiltered fever dream of half-baked ideas, stitched together without logic or coherence. Characters appear and disappear without reason, motivations make zero sense, and the dialogue is so atrocious it feels like a parody of bad horror movies. The film’s attempts at being deep or artistic result in frustratingly pretentious nonsense that leads nowhere. The Acting: Painful to Endure Not a single performance in this movie feels remotely convincing. The actors stumble through their lines with all the enthusiasm of hostages forced to participate in a low-budget student film. The main character, the mermaid, is mute for most of the movie, and yet she still somehow manages to be the least cringeworthy part of the cast— which says a lot about the quality of the performances. Horror Without Any Horror For a film that markets itself as horror, "Mermaid Down" is completely devoid of anything scary or suspenseful. Instead of tension or atmosphere, we get mind-numbing boredom and cheap, predictable jump scares that wouldn’t even startle a nervous cat. The asylum setting— which should have been a goldmine for eerie horror— is wasted on dull, repetitive scenes that go nowhere. Pacing & Editing: A Nightmare (Not in a Good Way) The movie drags on endlessly, with scenes stretching far beyond their welcome and others ending so abruptly that it feels like chunks of the film were accidentally deleted. The pacing is all over the place— moments that should have weight are rushed, while pointless sequences are drawn out until you wish for the sweet relief of the credits. Final Verdict: An Absolute Disaster "Mermaid Down" is one of the most bafflingly awful horror films of the past decade. It takes an original concept and butchers it beyond recognition, leaving nothing but an unwatchable wreck in its place. Avoid this movie at all costs— unless you’re in the mood to waste 90 minutes of your life on pure agony. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Char T A movie about a traumatised mermaid, the movie lacked a storyline; it was difficult to follow. It was full of violence and gory scenes for no reason. Wouldn't recommend. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Victor I I suppose this film might have been scary if I was a mermaid that had never seen nor heard of a human before. I suppose it could have been purposefully entertaining past the amusement I found in how deep my confusion could go, if I was a strange doctor with a violently psychosexual attraction to mermaids. If it was actually written to be funny I would have given it a solid 3. Decent performances by actors instructed to have their characters do and say the most inexplicable things. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review Stephany T This is a really bad movie lol Except for occasionally some slight sexual scene, basically nothing worth to watch. I watched the whole thing in complete confusion. Definitely won't recommend this movie, don't waste your time to watch this. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Sarah T It was awful. Like a perv boy made it. It's all violence but weirdly sexual too. Characters have 0 development. It's just bad.
