Nov 1, 2007 Full Review Ben Walters Time Out There are plentiful perilous countdowns, most of the set-pieces are impressively mounted and, in its own silly way, the pay-off offers a glancing blow at US foreign policy. Mate P ***SLIGHT SPOILERS*** Mission: Impossible III is improvement from the previous entry, but not as good as the first one. The writing is mostly great. The dialogues are fun and fluid, while the characters are good. Owen Davien as the villain is kind of the perfect version of Sean Ambrose in Mission: Impossible II. His main goal is money and he is very intense, but he doesn't do all the stupid and sexual things that are in the second film. He is the most complete villain in the franchise. The best scene in the film is shown twice and I understand the reason behind that, but I think it would've been better if they only showed it when it happened. One the other hand I really liked that instead of telling us what the mission will be, they just cut to it happening. With this technique, there was less exposition. The tone is mostly incredibly tense, but there are a few great emotional and fun moments. I love how it ends. The cinematography is good when it's not too shaky, but because most of the time it is, I didn' enjoy it that much. Slow motion is used much more gently. The Vatican sequence is well-edited, the pacing is perfect. Probably my favourite in the film. The Shanghai running sequence is the best in the franchise. Michael Giacchino's score is amazing, it has a few new themes and his version of the main theme is very inventive and refreshing. The cast is great, with a perfectly cast villain. This film has the best acting performances in the whole franchise. Tom Cruise gives the most intense performance in the series that is overshadowed by the outstanding Philip Seymour Hoffman. Mission: Impossible III is way more emotional and intense than the previous films, but it's not as well-crafted as the first, because of its generic third act. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/20/25 Full Review Audience Member It's no secret that M:I films are supposed to be a team-oriented films but this third outing just goes out of its way to keep Tom Cruise the main focus. Which isn't all that interesting. They fix this problem in the next set of films. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/19/25 Full Review Russell H Not bad. Hoffman was great. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/19/25 Full Review Lukas S It had its moments but out of the whole franchise this third entry lacked as much as the first movie did, after the bar was raised by the 2nd movie of course this 3rd film would struggle Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/18/25 Full Review Mark J A step up from the last and enjoyed the story a lot more. The stunts also start to step up here. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review Mark F One of the top 3 in the franchise. The bridge sequence is great, also the Rome heist is Mission Impossible at its best. The only negative is the handling of Ethan and his wife's relationship is saccharin but that's a JJ Abrams trait - he's good at action and spectacle, not so good at characters and subtlety.
