Mudbound offers a well-acted, finely detailed snapshot of American history whose scenes of rural class struggle resonate far beyond their period setting. Read critic reviews

      Movie Info

Set in the rural American South during World War II, Dee Rees' Mudbound is an epic story of two families pitted against one another by a ruthless social hierarchy, yet bound together by the shared farmland of the Mississippi Delta. Mudbound follows the McAllan family, newly transplanted from the quiet civility of Memphis and unprepared for the harsh demands of farming. Despite the grandiose dreams of Henry, his wife Laura struggles to keep the faith in her husband's losing venture. Meanwhile, Hap and Florence Jackson -- sharecroppers who have worked the land for generations -- struggle bravely to build a small dream of their own despite the rigidly enforced social barriers they face. The war upends both families' plans as their returning loved ones, Jamie McAllan and Ronsel Jackson, forge a fast but uneasy friendship that challenges the brutal realities of the Jim Crow South in which they live.

Well-acted and moving story, despite the typical Hollywood clichà (C)s.

Despite lacking in enough intensity and the fact that all female characters only seem to be spectators of what happens around them, this is a haunting film that exposes a depressing moment in American history when slavery was in many ways perpetuated long after it was over.

This is an example of a great Netflix film. With a superb cast, this tells about racial American division in the World-War II era. It is both emotive and heartfelt whilst also being bitterly tragic.

There is some really outstanding acting basically by the entire cast in this racism drama about the bond between a white farmers family and their black worker neighbors. Things never get too sentimental, but rather realistic, keeping a subtle approach to the themes up until the horrible climax of the film. Even after that it doesn't lose its glimpse of hope. A moving and touching film that has some important points to make, even about today.
