JK Sooja Common Sense Media This is a slow and contemplative anime drama about a boy learning to become more confident. For this reason, My Oni Girl might be too leisurely to command attention. Jun 12, 2024 Full Review Brittany Vincent Decider While this Ghibli-esque movie looks and sounds great, it’s a difficult watch thanks to its grating characters, plodding pace, and sometimes nonsensical story construction. Jun 10, 2024 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine There are some engaging fantasy elements throughout the film, and a fair amount of humour, but ultimately nothing really shakes the perfunctory nature of the total product. Rated: 6/10 Jun 5, 2024 Full Review Charles Hartford But Why Tho? A Geek Community My Oni Girl is a decent movie. If you are someone who can’t get enough of the everyday person drawn into a fantastical adventure...this film will scratch that itch. If you are looking for a film that sets itself apart...this one does not...stand out. Rated: 6.5/10 May 27, 2024 Full Review Sam Barsanti IGN Movies It’s never a good thing when an ostensible romance, even one that is more about friendship than love, would be better without half of its central couple. Rated: 4/10 May 24, 2024 Full Review Daniel Hart Ready Steady Cut By the time you reach the end of My Oni Girl, you will adore Tsumugi and Hiiragi, and while it’s unlikely there will be a sequel (it feels like a one-off), there’s undoubtedly re-watch value. Jay W "My Oni Girl" plays with fire, in it utilizes a lot of story tropes that drive me crazy in less talented hands. I typically hate stories where misunderstandings lead to people running away. I hate vague world building with unclear consequences. And I hate when stories take an extreme tonal shift part way through the story. But, in this film, these things didn't bother me as much. The secret to that success comes down to the likability of our main characters. The animation and voice acting are both really good. I want to give a special shoutout to Victoria Washington who plays Tsumugi in the English Dub, she does a great job conveying all the emotions this character goes on. The first half of the movie is almost formatted like it could be episodes in an anime series. The two leads come across various characters on their adventure and help them out in some way. This isn't a format I typically enjoy. But in this one we get to see how kind and thoughtful our main character Hiigari is. Hiigari is just the nicest guy, the type of guy that would give you the shirt off his back. The worldbuilding might be vague, but the audience is given just enough information to keep things grounded yet mysterious. The movie takes a drastic turn in tone about halfway through. Always refreshing when a movie keeps you on your toes. Much like the Tsumugi, the movie might be a little demon, but it so cute and likable I can't help but enjoy it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Audience Member Good, but underwhelming. My Oni Girl isn't anything special, nor is it bad. The story follows a boy and an Oni traveling to find her mother, who end up crossing into the Oni world. The story tries to jam in multiple plot lines that feel pointless to the main story. It feels as if even the movie cannot decide whether to be a runaway or fantasy film, which picks up rushed pacing issues for the first half and an almost dragging feeling for the next half. This story would have benefited as a TV series rather than a movie. While I cannot comment on the performance of the original Japanese audio, I can almost guarantee it would've been a better experience than the English dub. Awkward voice lines coupled with monotone acting makes for a boring viewing, disappointing considering Iyuno's track record with English dubs (mainly Pluto and Maboroshi) along with their acquisition of SDI Media (Devilman Crybaby, Penguin Highway, A Whisker Away, etc.). The biggest compliment is the animation, with Studio Colorido's fluid style and cinematic coloring. Overall, the movie makes for a good one-and-done experience, hopefully Studio Colorido learns from this experience to improve their future projects and make great movies again. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Idan Charles L The art and animation are awesome, But the story is sub par and the Oni girl and her father are unlikeble assholes. This movie is so dumb and purposes less!! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Rowdy B It's almost an iyashikei ("healing") anime... There are some scary monsters but they're de-emphasized and even though some people get hurt it's mostly implied and offscreen. Conflict is minimal. But there's low-conflict and then there's boring, and this movie steers too far toward boring. Might be okay if you're really stressed out and need something cute and relaxing. Otherwise there are better films to watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review harrah t It's confusing. The plot is all over the place. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/18/24 Full Review Audience Member A cute and lighthearted film about not hiding your true intentions and living the life you choose to live, but completely misses its own point at the very end.
