Critics Consensus

My Scientology Movie offers a personal perspective on the controversial religion whose lack of investigative depth is more than balanced out by its sense of humor and all-around entertainment value.

Sophie Gilbert The Atlantic My Scientology Movie, the newest film by the British documentarian Louis Theroux, vibrates with effort-with machinations and stunts and stitch ups that all seem intent on producing an "aha" moment that remains tantalizingly out of reach. Jun 16, 2017 Full Review Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle There's not a lot of shockingly new information per se, but watching Theroux filming covert Scientologists while they in turn film him, and so on, has its own sort of meta-charm. Rated: 2/5 Mar 30, 2017 Full Review John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter New look at well-charted territory adds just enough to justify its existence. Mar 11, 2017 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The doc boasts no greater analysis into the churchs operations, though its irreverent comic stuntwork entertains. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 4, 2022 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Rehashes old information in an entertaining way. Rated: 3/5 Mar 4, 2021 Full Review Josh Goller Spectrum Culture The somewhat aimless My Scientology Movie may be entertaining, but it's far from essential. Audience Member The documentary mostly focuses on the alleged abuse that occurs in Scientology and the stories of ex-members experiences, as well as focusing on the leader Miscavige but not really on what the church believes. The documentary is well produced and worth watching but not exceptional. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member It was fun to watch but the bottom line; this is just an extended documentary, so not really a "film". Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review bryan b Aimless and wandering around trying to make a point that this is a cult not a religion. I would have rather seen the final edits of the recreations and interviews with the people who were there and the cult's reprisals. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A very good natural/take on the scientology and its problems. A must see particularly for the believers. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Terribly edited. Directionless. Not at all planned out. The hiring of actors is pointless and Marty Rathbun is clearly very mentally ill (and has apparently reconnected with Scientology) and Louis Theroux spends the entirety of the movie oddly taunting him. There are better, more informative documentaries about this cult and you should seek them out and skip this one. I have no idea why this is so highly rated here...it's a terrible documentary. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review dustin d I liked that Louis Theroux looks exactly like me, which really made this feel like MY Scientology movie. I once visited a Scientology church in California and got an "audit" as a lark. I later came to find out the woman who gave me the audit was Leah Remini's mother. I disagree with the critics' consensus My Scientology Movie doesn't go into enough depth. I think Theroux did a decent job given the level of access at hand. What I think is missing is the "so what?" factor. Yes, Scientology is bonkers, and it seems to have taken hold of many Hollywood elites. But why should the Average Joe, who is just trying to raise his children and make ends meet, care what a bunch of Hollywood cranks are up to?
