Angie C Amazing. Terrible. Both in equal measure. Where the budget was spent remains a mystery... because it certainly was not put towards the acting, editing, script, directing, "special effects" or cinematography. Highlight though ... was the various scenes of the witches turning into various different animals. This is a rollicking romp through picturesque Bali, with a weirdly emotionless leading man, whose demise would of been welcome. A must see for anyone who doesn't value continuity, explanation or resolution. A must see for bad movie lovers. It appears an American woman studying voodoo and black magic gets more what she bargained for with a witch and soon becomes this free roaming head looking for fresh blood.... or something. Her friend? Boyfriend? Passing Acquentence? Lionel Richie filipino lookalike is somewhat concerned, but maybe not. The acting in this is amazingly atrocious. Yes, I will need to see this again. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member The reputation would have you believe this is a crazy, off-the-walls Indonesian movie that is like something you've never seen before. While it has its moments of absurdity, it's actually a straight forward plot. Yes, the floating head is hilarious, but outside of a few transformation scenes the movie isn't as bizarre as you would expect. The climatic laser battle at the end of the movie was fun, but that was about the only part worth checking out. It's not like watching Tetsuo: The Iron Man or Eraserhead for the first time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Some movies succeed from a great story, great characters or just sheer star power. Mystics in Bali is not such a movie. This movie is so laughably bad it is ridiculous. The characters are so unbelievable in their reactions to events. And the plot...and that cackling shrill laugh...yeesh. I don't even know how to describe this mess. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is bonkers. It is a vampire movie, yes here me out. But it's a different kind of vampire called a penanggalan a vampire that can sever its head from it's body with all it's internal organs dangling from it's neck and seeks out to feed on pregnant women. The best thing about it is the penanggalan doesn't sparkle, isn't emo and is just an emotionless abomination that feeds just to feed. I don't want to spoil to much but if i remember right there is like this crazy magic dual between the witch and a.... well i don't know what the hell the other guy is supposed to be so i'll just say he's a wizard. Crazy special effects, pretty good pace, cheesy as all hell. If you haven't seen this movie it's worth tracking it down. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member This is the first horror movie that I saw from Indonesia, it's the first Indonesian movie i've ever seen. Unfortunately it come out for humorous than horrifying. While researching a book that takes her to Bali and the black magic cult of Leák, Cathy meets an evil witch which promises to train her in the dark arts. Tricked, Cathy is turned into a Penanggalan; a flying vampire with internal organs hanging from her neck. It is now up to the local holy men who are then enforced to do battle with the forces of evil. I honestly can say the poorly written story is the best part of the movie. I had some laughs during the "scary" moments of the movies, which none it has. I've never seen so many poorly written characters and their reaction to the situations. In one scene, a woman literally barfs up three mice in green slime and the characters act like one of them farted. I'm not making this up, the ending will probably make you laugh harder than any horror movie has in years. As some guy we never heard off or seen fight against a Lake Monster, trying to explain the "climax" hilariousness is trying to explain the plot of Gingerdead Man to someone without having the person laugh. Mystics in Bali is unfortunately my Indonesian that i've ever watched, and it's also the most hilarious horror i've ever seen. I recommend this to bad movie lover, though it only has a few hilarious moment. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Read all reviews
