Harry Alan Potamkin The New Masses The problems and their tangents provoked by The New Babylon could fill a book. That is contribution enough. I urge everyone to examine this detaining film for himself. Mar 26, 2020 Full Review Matt Bailey Not Coming to a Theater Near You The film has all of the vigor and pure cinematic originality of Abel Gance's Napoleon without all the pretensions to greatness shouldered by that film. Audience Member The plot is just a vehicle for this surreal, innovative and radical film. For sure one of the best Soviet silent movies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A little confusing, you will need something to read of what is about and then you will enjoy this majestic art film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Many famous films from the past live up to their reputations. Of this film's contemporaries, Eisenstein and Pudovkin's films surely do. But this is pretty poor, by the filmmaking standards of any era, let alone the harsh company of the masters of montage. The Shostakovitch score, while admirable as a piece of music on its own, doesn't do the film any favours, and the film does it no favours. Savour the music, avoid the film and find a better one. (Seen at a live performance of film and music at Angel Place City Recital Hall in Sydney. Performance generally lagged behind the film, which compounded some issues.)
