Dennis Lim Village Voice In-your-face as it is, Sempel's Hag-iography fades into a gurgle of white noise long before its 90-minute running time is up. But all those lofty intentions don't make the abrasive, self-obsessed personality that flames across the screen any less insufferable. Rated: 1/5 May 16, 2002 Full Review V.A. Audience Member NINA HAGEN PUNK+GLORY is a musical, interpersonal expose of a day in the life of it's namesake. Though the film utterly fails desperately to establish any kind of usual (expected) narrative coherence or even a mere logical chain-of-event thread in it's telling, it is (especially for us life-long, die-hard fanatics and followers) nonetheless a long overdue tribute, expose, chronicle and (most importantly) an earnest and well-intended paying-of-respects to an incredibly talented, versatile, multi-faceted, lovely, unique and crazy-ass-mother-fucker whom the mainstream media (particularly, or is it exclusively, in AMERICA!) years ago (seemingly) commonly agreed to collectively disrespect, belittle and outright ignore, even though she has continued (for almost forty years!) to regularly release new and eclectic albums of every type of music imaginable, tour and play live gigs internationally and also being an outspoken advocate, supporter, speaker and (freedom) fighter for a myriad of positive Earth, People and animal-friendly causes. This documentary (though severely flawed compared to what COULD HAVE BEEN documented about Nini over the years) stands alone as a milestone paying-of-respect which has been long overdue for nin AHA gen, and, for that alone, I simply must applaud and graciously thank the people involved in this labor of love, but also for giving me yet another pristine example of how sometimes, even after years and years of neglect and collective refusal in the divination and attention of decent, proper dignity, of which an entity is (or should be, anyway) entitled-to for all they have done and the years of entertainment, enjoyment and service of which they have more than done their part in providing us with! **** Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
