A successful Los Angeles art-gallery owner's idyllic life is marred by the constant traveling of her handsome second husband. While he is away, she is shaken by the arrival of a manuscript written by her first husband, who she has not seen in years. The manuscript tells the story of a teacher who finds a trip with his family turning into a nightmare. As Susan reads the book, it forces her to examine her past and confront some dark truths.

Wow this film definitely sticks with you, and has you thinking about it long after. The scene where they run them off the road just had me feeling allsorts I didn't want to think about. Like what would/ coukd you do in the position 🙆‍♂️. But great film, the story in the book ties in so well with the real story. I totally got it. Pretty amazing

A film that isn't nearly as smart as it thinks it is. The critics really love the atmosphere and style, but it seems to come at the cost of substance. The film is basically a neat little trick, but the sort where you can see just how it's done

The perfect definition of metafiction, absurd Jake Gyllenhaal chilling interpretation, and an absurd plot that reconnects in a single logical thread is absurd, perfect ending and excellent directing work to diversify the present part with the impersonification and of the novel and past scenes
