Critics Consensus

Sadie Sink manages to rise above the schlock in a doomed rock-opera that sadly loses its purpose and steam while rambling to the finish line.

Ben Travis Empire Magazine For all its originality, O’Dessa can’t help but get tangled up in its own mythology, dragged down by a romance that never sizzles. Rated: 2/5 Mar 31, 2025 Full Review Elisabeth Vincentelli New York Times Is a cliché turned on its head still a cliché? “O’Dessa” will keep you wondering, and that counts for something. Mar 20, 2025 Full Review William Bibbiani TheWrap A rock musical like 'O’Dessa' only works if it sufficiently rocks, and 'O’Dessa' somewhat rocks. Mar 20, 2025 Full Review Marissa Hill Shade Studios Though it stumbles on shallow plotting and a rushed love story, its infectious energy and cult-classic potential make it a thrilling, flawed gem. Jul 30, 2025 Full Review Sammie Purcell Rough Draft Atlanta “O’Dessa” might draw inspiration from the likes of David Bowie, but it’s nowhere near as electric. Jul 18, 2025 Full Review Cody Allen Geek Vibes Nation When the credits roll, O'Dessa leaves you floating somewhere between dream and reality, melodies still humming in your head like fireflies trapped in a jar. Karen A I never write reviews, but I thought this one deserved one. Simple it may be, yet so many other more "complex" pieces miss their mark. This one didn't! There's a lot about this movie that was bizarre and even made me feel uncomfortable at times, but overall I think it was an amazing original piece that made me feel very much the way old dystopian/ alternate reality movies from the mid and late 1980s did! Gritty, dirty, and punk rock and not at all the type of dystopian world you would not want to live in, even if you were at the top of the heap; Mixed with an epic rock opera! I believe this movie has the makings of a true cult classic. Someone said the songs were forgettable, but the performances were not (they were amazing) and I think that's probably a fair assessment. It's supposed to be part of the point -reconnecting through music and love and the ability to embrace humanity. Which is something that in this dystopian world has truly been lost. People have given into not only their worst natures, but their worst habits of consumption. Whether it be the ruthless exploitation of their fellow neighbor, or trash TV or delighting in the misery and mutilation of others. This society barely merits the title and has nothing left except to be consumed by its worst nature! The entire point of odessa's story is to give them back the memory of their humanity, love, and even hope, and that they can aspire to something greater. Not just the dregs of the worst that humanity and society has to offer. I even loved her and her true love's ending, because it's not what we'd expect in an epic hero story, but it' still gave them the happy and peaceful ending that they deserved. In one form or another. I wish it had gotten more promotion- I just stumbled upon it by chance. I truly believe it'll become a cult classic one day soon! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/25 Full Review Trevor S A rock opera harkening back to the days of “Rocky Horror “ and “Flash Gordon” In a world lost to one man’s greed and ego exacerbated by control of the media that has filled the mind of followers with poison. One person possesses the ability to save the world with love. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review Christian o Has a message people may not quite understand The songs or audio tracks in the film are amazing People really have short attention span now at days Imma give it a 3.5 it's really good Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review Sarah C The biggest miss is the music is forgetable. However, the performances are great. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/11/25 Full Review Eric M While this movie may not be for everyone, it certainly struck a chord (pun intended) with me. As a lover of all things 80s, the film resonated deeply, and the music was easily a top 10 soundtrack for me. While the movie was a bit weird and perhaps dragged slightly in spots, I greatly enjoyed it. Sadie Sink shows she's capable of easily carrying a movie, and her vocals are outstanding. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/10/25 Full Review JKRowling7 7 This film proved to be a compelling experience layered with both strengths and shortcomings. It offered a poignant reflection on the cost of inhabiting narratives shaped by others. Many tend to gravitate toward comforting illusions rather than confront unsettling truths, but such is the nature of the human condition. Dearest Baby Sadie: "Veritas vos liberabit" the truth shall set you free. And yes, Wizards appear to operate on a plane of insight and mastery that often surpasses their Witch counterparts. I hold profound respect and love for the duality within each of us, the interplay of shadow and light. Call it a "grey area" if you must, but I’ve found it to be a space of remarkable potential and authenticity. This is my most candid reflection: the film wasn't bad by any means, but it didn’t fully resonate with me. In overall terms, I’d give it a solid 2.5, not a failure, but not quite a favorite either.
