Critics Consensus

Sadie Sink manages to rise above the schlock in a doomed rock-opera that sadly loses its purpose and steam while rambling to the finish line.

Ben Travis Empire Magazine For all its originality, O’Dessa can’t help but get tangled up in its own mythology, dragged down by a romance that never sizzles. Rated: 2/5 Mar 31, 2025 Full Review Elisabeth Vincentelli New York Times Is a cliché turned on its head still a cliché? “O’Dessa” will keep you wondering, and that counts for something. Mar 20, 2025 Full Review William Bibbiani TheWrap A rock musical like 'O’Dessa' only works if it sufficiently rocks, and 'O’Dessa' somewhat rocks. Mar 20, 2025 Full Review Rafael Motamayor IGN Movies O'Dessa is a bold, cyberpunk musical with vibrant visuals with a catchy soundtrack. Rated: 8/10 May 3, 2025 Full Review Matthew Simpson Exclaim! Perhaps O'Dessa's target audience is aimed at theatre kids in the middle of a '90s phase, but not many others. Rated: 4/10 Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Matthew St. Clair Cinematic Words of a Chaotic Gemini (Substack) As much as the final destination is an overdrawn climax, the performances, the visuals, and the eclectic soundtrack in O'Dessa make the journey through Satylite City a memorable one. DKFL 7 The previous comment raises a compelling point. The phrase "The truth will set you free" resonates across multiple dimensions—both inward and outward. It speaks not only to the liberation found in confronting our own inner truths, but also to the deeper freedom that emerges when we align ourselves with greater universal principles. Truth, in this sense, isn’t always loud or immediate—it often lives in the quiet spaces between words, waiting to be discerned with patience and reflection. For those exploring this further, Comment #42 on the topic of "A Sacrifice" may provide additional insight. “I’ve gotta take a little time, A little time to think things over. I better read between the lines, In case I need it when I’m older.” —Greg Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/21/25 Full Review JKRowling7 7 This film proved to be a compelling experience layered with both strengths and shortcomings. It offered a poignant reflection on the cost of inhabiting narratives shaped by others. Many tend to gravitate toward comforting illusions rather than confront unsettling truths, but such is the nature of the human condition. Dearest Baby Sadie: "Veritas vos liberabit" the truth shall set you free. And yes, Wizards appear to operate on a plane of insight and mastery that often surpasses their Witch counterparts. I hold profound respect and love for the duality within each of us, the interplay of shadow and light. Call it a "grey area" if you must, but I’ve found it to be a space of remarkable potential and authenticity. This is my most candid reflection: the film wasn't bad by any means, but it didn’t fully resonate with me. In overall terms, I’d give it a solid 2.5, not a failure, but not quite a favorite either. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review Goose R Odessa is the daughter of a rambler , a rambler singer, who is the prophesy redeemer of the post apocalyptic world with a magic guitar. Cool songs on this rock musical and it has my favorite vegan actor Sadie Sink 🍿🍿🍿🍿/5 on Hulu Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Audience Member I can't believe I actually finished this. Songs were boring. World was annoying. Man entirely too effeminate and then they die. The end. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/02/25 Full Review Audience Member The beginning is a tad bit slow, it will make sense as you watch. Great movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/01/25 Full Review Jasmin C Enjoy this one. Reading the polarized reviews was fascinating. Thinking folks who hated it probably hated Rocky Horror in their past life.
