Audience Member An inspiring film showing events before and during the Russian revolution as seen through the eyes of a typical town. The film subtly puts forward the message that all average people are brothers be they Russians or Germans and that the real enemy is not each other but instead is the people in power. For an early sound film the sound effects were quite something at times mocking the folly of war. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Perhaps a little dated and lacking much relevance to a modern audience, it is however a very subtle critic on the Soviet ideals whilst at the same time working within the framework of the totalitarian system it was made. Excellent film making given the circumstances. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Drama about a small Russian village and its internal and external conflicts during the time of the First World War. The film can be gripping and entertaining, but the acting is underwhelming and while the premise could sound interesting, it is not held up by a good screenplay. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member An early Soviet talkie by Barnet champions an internationalist perspective on peace through the lens of Russia in war and revolution. Well done but looks like a silent film with the soundtrack as an afterthought. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Boris Barnet's tale of a small village during World War I is more a series of loosely connected sketches than a straight narrative, and "confused" is the word that comes to mind. The attitudes towards the Germans are not so much complex as they are jumbled and inconsistent. The odd sound design could be interpreted as ironic (or poetic?) commentary but to me it just felt misguided. Furthermore, the rhythms of the film (occasional quick bursts of narrative action alternating with long, slow stretches) make it dreadfully dull for the most part. Still, it contains a handful of lyrical touches here and there and a few of the anecdotes (particularly those that resemble Grand Illusion) are compelling.
