What to Know

Critics Consensus

With Old Dads, Bill Burr shows signs of promise as a filmmaker -- but they're largely muffled by his fitfully funny screenplay's reliance on tired jokes about generational divides.

Audience Says

If you're a Bill Burr fan, then Old Dads' brand of culture clash comedy should be good for plenty of solid laughs.

John Anderson Wall Street Journal The writing sometimes collapses into overkill, but sometimes it is precisely on point. Oct 23, 2023 Full Review Oliver Jones Observer Rather than challenge himself, Burr instead uses the film to adapt his schtick into a three-hander bro comedy addressing the generational divide regarding modern mores and language. Rated: 2/4 Oct 23, 2023 Full Review Todd McCarthy Deadline Hollywood Daily A boorish and obnoxiously vulgar comedy that, since it can’t claim any other great distinction, might well have been expressly written to break the all-time record for use of the f-word in the major studio movie. Oct 20, 2023 Full Review Karl Puschmann New Zealand Herald It’s well-made, if nearly entirely predictable, and because Burr essentially just transplanted his stand-up set straight into Jack’s mouth, it’s often laugh-out-loud funny. Feb 12, 2025 Full Review Chase Hutchinson The Inlander (Spokane, WA) To even call Old Dads a movie feels like a gross overstatement as it hardly meets the requirements to be considered one. Instead, it is like a series of recycled stand-up bits that Burr has already done better before. Here, he just bombs over and over. Jan 4, 2024 Full Review tt stern-enzi Fox19 (Cincinnati, OH) Bill Burr looks like he's doing stand-up during most of it. Bobby Cannavale is hilarious in a very broad, crazy, zany kind of way... Shane O Good fun worth a watch , it misers that mark on a few jokes but over all enjoyable Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Russell H He was funny in this but I wish it didn't take itself so seriously at times. Could have been way funnier without a message. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Kilpa E Old Dads is funny. Some critics are taking it too seriously. True, the film doesn't say much that hasn't been said before, but it doesn't need to. It's a steady serving of laughs. The pacing is iffy at times and the runtime is on the long side for a romp, but the length is justified by the three-act structure that sees each subplot through. Granted, this is not the culmination of cinema. The Netflix-style close-up to close-up coverage can get tiring during dialogue. The family drama might feel less conventional if it was allowed to breathe like a stage play, which Katie Aselton and Bill Burr could certainly pull off. As it is, the threat of blandness is still mostly defused by convincing acting. The ensemble cast is solid throughout and the main characters well-written. Miles Robbins is an unexpected highlight as the millennial villain. The Gen Z characters can sound like caricatures, but this is an egalitarian film: no one's safe, and the old dads are often just as ridiculous. Burr delivers regular laughs in the classic comic's role, an asshole version of himself — although Jack isn't a comedian but an everyman entrepreneur with dubiously good mic technique. The script Burr co-wrote sometimes serves as a prop basket for his tirades, but the film knows when he's the asshole. If you look past the f-bombs and coarse hilarity, Old Dads carries a genuinely warm undertone of familial love. Definitely worth a watch, but I'm a biased long-time listener just checking in on ya. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/25 Full Review Audience Member U like Burr, but he seems like he’s a little out of touch on this one, ironically. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Michael Y What a great comedic statement about the growing cultural divide in America. What is even more interesting are the pompous critics who slam the film because it hits too close to their thin skin. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Diogo F When a movie delivers on its promises it can never be a miss. Critics will tell you that this is no cinema classic piece and to them I say "no sh*t sherlock", it's a Bill Burr film. Its great entertainment, good jokes, great laughs and a "I don't give a damn" attitude for people who would feel offended by it... Great! Someone has to!
