Pauline Kael The New Yorker It isn’t just the echoing moments that keep you absorbed. It’s those reverberant dreamland settings and Leone’s majestic, billowing sense of film movement; the images seem to come at you in waves of feeling. Sep 13, 2023 Full Review Paul Attanasio Washington Post The movie's four hours long, but no one had the time to write a single real character. Jan 4, 2018 Full Review Gary Arnold Washington Post This would-be epic schlep, dragging almost 50 years of chronology over a sluggish 140 minutes, is far too slight of text and ponderous of presentation to sustain more than nodding-off dramatic interest. May 5, 2017 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills A bad movie at any length, swimming in the syrup of Morricone's score. But hey, some call it a masterpiece. Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Toussaint Egan Polygon Once Upon a Time in America is a tremendous work that captures the animating ambition and sorrow at the heart of the American Dream. Ariona J “Once upon a time in America”, is a brilliant movie because it tells a deep and emotional story, with amazing acting. It dives into themes such as, friendship, poverty, betrayal, and how time changes people. It truly is a beautifully written movie. It tells a deep and complex story about the American dream. It does a great job visually showing how the American dream isn’t always what it seems. The cinematography, music score and style of which the film was made of adds to the overall greatness of this film. The way the characters are written and portrayed makes it feel real and relatable. The characters aren’t just one dimensional but very complex in their own way. It is truly is a timeless film with other themes outside of the typical crime movies like loss and memory. The only problem I have with this movie is that it’s 4 hours long and can get boring at times; but I do believe it was 4 hours for a reason. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review Jacob B Large, epic, complex, and emotionally devastating tale from Sergio Leone. A film that should be as well known as its predecessor, “The Godfather”. The unedited version is a masterpiece! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/25 Full Review Daniel J Make sure you see the correct and full edit of this film. It is challenging and will leave you scrambling to wonder if you can even trust your own interpretations and understandings of the story. Fantastic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/03/25 Full Review Rami A There's a lot to love with this one: great performances, a good plot, a good cast, and some good music, including a lot of technical stuff. It's lengthy, sure, but if you can make it worth it, the length would be the least of people's concerns. The character development is particularly impressive, with each role adding depth and nuance to the story. The way the film explores complex themes like love, loss, and redemption resonates on many levels, making it not just entertaining but also thought-provoking. Visually, it's stunning; the cinematography captures the essence of the settings beautifully, enhancing the overall atmosphere. The pacing, despite the length, manages to keep the viewer engaged, with twists and turns that maintain interest throughout. Additionally, the musical score elevates pivotal moments, underscoring the emotional weight of the narrative. Overall, it’s an experience that lingers long after the credits roll, inviting reflection and discussion among audiences. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/05/25 Full Review John F Not impressed with the cinematography. It has great actors but the storyline took too long to develop. It was very difficult to keep my attention. The gore and violence was the glue that held the movie together, if you are into that. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Vito c Once upon a time in america, it is a masterpiece movie.
