Josh B Must watch! It's a masterpiece. Great acting and directing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/23 Full Review Audience Member a dark and gripping tale of a well-to-do Spanish-Filipino family during the Japanese Invasion of the Philippine Islands, from pre-occupation to American liberation Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Watch the Filipino society crumble through the Second World War from the perspective of rich haciendero families with an American-infused Spanish culture. The Japanese are not the enemies here. The foundation of the society was unstable as it is and the war was a catalyst to its imbalance and overturn. Carefully crafted and deftly placed set pieces are the visual highlights of Peque Gallaga, a master of big movement and character development. Also witness Cherie Gil as an innocent young lass and Joel Torre with low self-esteem -- opposite the roles they play in their careers as of late. It would have garnered a perfect score if weren't for the very opportune third act gunfight. Still, the plethora of themes from personal to social commentary make it a must-watch for every Filipino. How I wish it was a required watch in high school. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member I understand why this is an important film in Philippine cinema. Overall, I think the performances were great but I really felt that this is a very indulgent film from Peque Gallaga. It needs editing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member **I have been looking for this movie for a good three years already... well it didn't disappoint... very good story... great cast and amazing acting from everyone... trust I was looking for weak point on this movie... I just could not find any... watch it... 5 stars without a doubt.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member I first saw this film when it came out in the 1980s, when I was in the Philippines and again recently. There is no doubt that the film marks a milestone in Philippine film making - it relies on visual metaphors instead of saying the obvious, for one thing. The vanishing breed of the hacenderos cocooned in their pseudo-aristocracy is interesting to watch if only because traces of these characters still exist in real life Philippines. But the usual hysteria to which Filipino cinema is addicted pervades the film still, strung on the usual cliches - characters like the hysterical, jewelry-obsessed Viring, the morose, Mama's boy and the pretentious mahjong-playing women strain credulity into laughable caricatures. And the deep flaws in production cannot be forgiven - Maya Valdez's and Fides Asencio's very 1980s lioness hairdos and outfits, the pristine white blouses of the nanny and the maids, unbelievably spotless in the tropical heat. And most of all the awkwardly spoken Spanish. What redeems this film is the story, a cinematic triptych of the de-evolution and redemption of an elitist class that is soon to vanish from the landscape.
