Justin M I believe this masterpiece of a film is one of the if not the greatest bit of film I’ve ever laid my eyes on. The outstanding storytelling along with the exciting characters keeps me and the rest of the audience entertained throughout the movie. Not to mention, even the artwork displayed is just stunning. Anyone with a pair of eyeballs and a spare hour out of their day should highly consider tuning in to such an excellent event; you will not be disappointed. The character development that is put into an hour is just magnificent. Hopefully a sequel is in the works, but as a stand-alone film, it wouldn’t bother me at all. Some may say this is a children’s film or that its target audience is kids, which I agree with. However, I don’t think that takes away from this film in any way shape or form. A true 10/10 editors choice. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/25 Full Review Torin F PACHAMAMA is a thoroughly charming if somewhat simplistic animated adventure. Centered in an indigenous Andean worldview, the film heartfully honors culture and place without being heavy-handed. And the psychedelic animation style will definitely appeal to those familiar with the plant medicine traditions of South America, which feel present in the film without being overtly acknowledged. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/08/23 Full Review Joel H The artwork is stunning. The music is also beautiful, especially the Andean flute music. The story is pleasant, though somewhat predictable. The real bad guys are the conquistadores - true enough. The Incas with their emperor are also thieves and imperialists, brought down by the "metal men" Spaniards. (The conquistadores only speak in Spanish, even in the English version, and with a very Spain accent.) My biggest complaint is that the Inca emperor is made out to be foppish and capricious, which would not likely be traits of such a person. There is little exploration of Inca culture - though there is a bit, and an admiration for their technical accomplishments. The indigenous culture that the protagonists (a young boy and girl) come from is more fleshed out, including their spirituality. Their specific culture is not identified, and it's not possible for me to say which elements of it are realistic. There is a Shaman, and devotion to Pachamama (Mother Earth) and the ancestors, all of which seem very plausible. There are references to primary crops: corn, potatoes and quinoa, which also seem realistic. What is less so are the Western traits of the children, particularly the young boy who is impetuous and defiant at the start; these do not seem to me like realistic Native tribal traits. The film is designed for Western young audiences, and the story is enjoyable despite such obvious flaws. I do recommend seeing it, for the gorgeous drawings, the music, and the relevant (though simplistic) bits of culture that children might pick up. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/26/21 Full Review johann m This may be one of Netflix's animated jewels. It's a simple story in which a young boy living in a remote village in the Andes Mountains dreams of becoming shaman. It explores the Inca culture and the end of the Empire with the Spanish Conquest. Very colorful visuals and a sweet story that will make you reflect on what was once lost by greed. Great music! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/12/25 Full Review Audience Member this animation not one of my favorites. I think the script is silly and stupid and not all characters are cool. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/12/25 Full Review Audience Member Nothing much as an animated family adventure with cultural charm and a certain formula to paint its familiar nature that questions the inviting appeal, but it is seriously unique by the definitely vibrant art style and likeable characterized turnouts towards convoluting delivery for a lasting impact.
