Critics Consensus

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales proves that neither a change in directors nor an undead Javier Bardem is enough to drain this sinking franchise's murky bilge.

Kristen Lopez Culturess As lumbering as its title, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will leave you running for the plank, or the exit. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Angie Han Mashable Oh, if only dead men told no tales. Then we might have avoided this fifth Pirates of the Caribbean adventure, which fails to justify its own existence in any way whatsoever. Jun 13, 2017 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times There are lame, crude jokes about bottoms and horologists. There is $230 million of CG effects that never look like anything more than pixels. And then there's Depp's panto drunkenness. Rated: 2/5 Jun 6, 2017 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review This is an unnecessary film that delivers exactly what the audience expects in the most uninteresting ways. Rated: 2/4 Apr 4, 2022 Full Review David Gonzalez The Cinematic Reel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tells No Tales is not a great film by any means. It is a passable finale to a franchise that has lasted longer than anyone ever anticipated. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 18, 2022 Full Review Cory Woodroof Curnblog Judge it accordingly, I suppose. The newest Pirates film isn't all that great, but it is enjoyable. If this series be your fancy, sail away. If not, stay at the dock. After all, dead-bored movie watchers tell no tales. BadWulf Great movie must see Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/18/25 Full Review Zander W If I were trying to make a movie that would ensure that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise died a horrific death, I could not imagine making a better film for that purpose than this idiocy. It feels like the creators actively hated the earlier movies and wanted to insult them as much as possible. The script is a total train wreck, the story is garbage, even the effects have gotten a serious downgrade. It's not even fun to hate watch. I just feel bad for the actors who are clearly doing their best trying to rescue a total shipwreck. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/02/25 Full Review Denton R Weak, sad, Jack is reduced to a clown. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/27/25 Full Review Dylan F It should be a crime what this team did to the lore, characters, and world-building of this franchise. So many plot holes and disrespectful retcons it's hard to keep count. Not to mention, they reduced Jack Sparrow's character to a bumbling shallow fool that appears on screen for no other reason than to be like "hey, it's me, Captain Jack Sparrow." The main villian and the whole ghost ship idea was lame and sorely half-baked. The originality, masterful storytelling, witty writing, and loveable characters from the original trilogy are nowhere to be found here. This movie is not even Canon to me. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/23/25 Full Review Leo M A film which inexplicably has two different names, the unnecessary fifth entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has its entertaining moments, but nothing more. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/11/25 Full Review Jared G Loved this installment. To me it felt fresh and had great new characters, as well as added to the mythology of the series very well. My only quell is I hope Disney makes good on the post-credits scene. Otherwise that is an awful way to end the series. The initial ending is excellent and could have wrapped it up beautifully. Here’s to hoping the post credits scene points to something else in the near future! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/22/25 Full Review Read all reviews
