Rampant (2018), directed by South Korean director Kim Sung-hoon, is a live-action dramatic Zombie horror thriller set in the historic past when the Korean nation of Joseon was a vassal state of the Manchu Qing Empire. The film is sub-titled in English.
Hyun Bin stars as the protagonist, the younger son of the Joseon King, who returns from his exile as a political hostage at the Qing court to retrieve his brother's widow and is swept up in the political instability and the Zombie plague sweeping the country. He reluctantly takes up the challenge to save his country from both the Zombies which are wreaking havoc across the country and from the evil machinations of the Minister of War, Kim Ja-joon, played by Jang Dong-gun, who wants to seize power and is behind the spreading of the Zombie plague.
The film, situated in South Korea's historic past, gives the film a depth and complexity, echoing perhaps a sentiment that the Korean peninsula, despite its desire to self-determine, has always been a political pawn and under the hegemonic control of a greater power. Interestingly, it is a Dutch merchant vessel which brings the Zombie plague to the shores of Joseon. The director juxtaposes the narrative of the returning prince, the prodigal son, transitioning to a state of adulthood against the evil machinations of the Minister of War. The two narratives crisscross at pivotal moments in the film creating the dramatic tension that moves the film.
I really liked Rampant. The beginning of the film had me hooked seeing the Zombie plague spread into the community and cause havoc. The film is dripping with bloody gore, violence, and suspense, and will have you on edge. It has all the elements of an excellent Zombie horror thriller and can hold its own against any of the big budgeted Hollywood Zombie films. But it's also a coming of age film where the protagonist Prince eventually takes up the mantle to save his people and accept his heroic calling. The fighting scenes are blood curdling as are the Zombies. The martial arts scenes are well-executed and seeing people turn into Zombies on screen truly horrifying.
The director has woven together many visual elements to create an intriguing film where terror and political instability meets heroism set in South Korea's historic past. It has all the element of a fine Zombie film but at its core; it's a film about good versus evil. If you are a fan of Zombie films, period dramas, thrillers, and/or fantasy films, you'll enjoy Rampant. The film, although somewhat formulaic, and a little too long, will definitely pull at your emotions.

Late R
The script is a bit weak – both the story and characters are rather generic and uninteresting -- so if you're looking for something original, unique or clever, this isn't it. Now, if you're after an action film blended with horror, then you'll find that ‘Rampant' is well-acted and nicely shot with great production design and lots of gory, zombie-killing fun. In short, this is one for action genre fans, particularly if you like historical settings and sword stuff.

With the proliferation of the zombie apocalypse programs, I have to say this had the most humanity and it examined the characters relationships very well intertwined with the action and horror scenes.
