Doillon's film opens with Auguste Rodin working on his sculptural interpretation of Dante's The Gates of Hell. It is all too tempting to see this as a metaphor for the film as a whole.

The best Rodin film yet...but that is not saying much when one surveys all of the movies that have been made to date about my favourite sculptor. A much better Camille Claudel here than in previous versions. Very abrupt ending with too much left unresolved.

SSSSSSlllloooowwww and boring. I like art its films, but this was brutal. All it was, was about his affairs with various students, and house keeper and a tiny bit about his art. Boring. And 2 hours of waiting for something to happen. Beautiful lighting...yeah, I liked the lighting. The rest was unbearable. A 1/2 star is too high of a rating.

Para celebrar o centenário da morte do famoso escultor francês Auguste Rodin, o veterano diretor Jacques Doillon realizou e escreveu o guião de Rodin, um filme que tinha como intenção documentar a vida do artista, mas que rapidamente se transformou numa obra de ficção baseada na criação da sua arte. Auguste Rodin é o homem por trás de obras como Os Burgueses de Calais, O Beijo e aquela que é criticamente considerada como a sua obra-prima, O Pensador. Todas as obras são apresentadas ou referenciadas ao longo do filme, mas a escultura que mais aflige o artista durante a narrativa é a escultura de Honoré de Balzac, que foi rebaixada pelos críticos durante o seu tempo de vida, mas que atualmente é admirada como a primeira escultura moderna da história. Paris, 1880. A história centra-se na relação entre Auguste Rodin (Vincent Lindon) e a sua brilhante aluna - e futura amante - Camille Claudel (Izia Higelin), mas prima apenas em breves momentos que captam com intensidade a paixão que Ronin detém pela escultura. A sua vida doméstica é ao lado da sua companheira de longa data, Rose (Severine Caneele), uma mulher do campo que sente uma tremenda inveja por Camille. Não era de admirar. Ela era a alma gémea que apreciava a sua arte e lhe oferecia conforto e conselhos. Mas o facto de Rodin não casar com ela, apesar da sua promessa, e de se sentir permanentemente na sua sombra em termos artísticos, começa a ser intolerável para Camille, criando tensão e conflitos na relação. O filme apresenta uma cinematografia concisa e elegante por parte de Christophe Beaucarne, uma produção fiel ao teor do filme, sente-se a vivacidade no local de trabalho de Rodin, ainda que o cenário por vezes peque na iluminação e uma música clássica, composta por Philippe Sarde, que entoa em momentos específicos do filme numa tentativa de enriquecer as cenas. Mas é sobretudo uma experiência muito aborrecida, demasiado intelectual e desprovida de uma narrativa consistente, ainda que cronologicamente os eventos estejam ordenados corretamente. O método aqui executado para contar a história falha redondamente. A sequência de cenas nunca consegue criar momentos dramáticos entre as personagens e isto deve-se à absoluta falta de empatia que Doillon permite que se estabeleça entre elas e a audiência. Omite cenas chave do filme e espera que consigamos associar o que se está a passar no momento com o que se passou no passado do filme, algo que nem sempre é evidente e que só vem acumular à frustração. Lindon oferece a Rodin uma presença forte no ecrã, mas está longe de ser um protagonista competente neste filme. A paixão e a arte são temas marcantes e recorrentes no guião de Rodin, mas o diálogo é demasiado elaborado e não cultiva as personagens. Contudo, a performance de Higelin foi a mais consistente, conseguindo elevar o material que lhe foi dado. O filme supostamente tem como foco principal a sua relação com Rodin, mas, feitas as contas, nem nesse aspeto é hábil na sua conclusão. Para os interessados em ver o lado da história de Camille Claudel, recomendo os filmes Camille Claudel (1988) e Camille Claudel 1915 (2013). Jacques Doillon, realizador de dramas recentes como A Child of Yours (2012) e Love Battles (2013), admitiu não apresentar grande devoção ao trabalho do escultor, mas certamente tinha as melhores das intenções. Deve agora parar e refletir neste seu trabalho. Mas não posso deixar de me interrogar. Deve seguramente existir mais na vida deste senhor do que aquilo que me foi apresentado. Nada como uma visita ao Museu Rodin em Paris, que sem dúvida seria mais interessante do que voltar a ver este filme. 2,5/10 http://bernardofreire.wixsite.com/visaodeumcritico

Malheureusement, Rodin est difficile à être vraiment apprécier en raison de son approche malgré un Vincent Lindon plutôt très convaincant dans le rôle principal. L'histoire n'as pas beaucoup d'intérêts et seul les séquences de sculpture peuvent s'avérer intéressantes, à moins d'être un réel admirateur du célèbre artiste.
