Mike McCahill Guardian Dramatically, alas, it remains rather flat. Rated: 2/5 Jun 26, 2014 Full Review Kathryn Bromwich Little White Lies This loose and wrong-headed Joseph Conrad adaptation is a paragon of the bland literary adaptation. Rated: 1/5 Jun 26, 2014 Full Review Trevor Johnston Time Out After a promising start, the story starts to drift between romance, maritime adventure and rite-of-passage tale. Rated: 2/5 Jun 24, 2014 Full Review John Bleasdale CineVue A handsomely made romantic drama which is ultimately sunk by its own clichés. Rated: 2/5 Mar 26, 2019 Full Review Graham Young Birmingham Mail Cloud Atlas star Zhu Zhu is mesmerising as the stowaway, Li, especially as she is cleverly filmed frequently naked. Rated: 4/5 Oct 10, 2014 Full Review Rich Cline Contactmusic.com his adaptation of Joseph Conrad's 1909 short story ambitiously twists the premise to add a bit of sexual tension, although the plot can't quite sustain itself right to the end. Peter F I declare an interest. I wrote and directed the movie, so of course I would give my film at least four stars. Many of the people who saw the film when it was released about 10 years ago enjoyed or even loved the movie, but were not film buffs and didn't bother to go online and vote on IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes. So watch the movie on Amazon or YouTube and then give it a rating please. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/15/23 Full Review Alex B I found this film to be a lovely story set in a gorgeous setting. This film was recommended by a friend and despite the film critics reviews it did not disappoint. Although I have not read the original book I found the story highlighted the value of human kindness, the benefits of forming bonds between strangers from different cultures and learning from cultural exchange. The film was stunning to watch in HDR with vivid colours of the natural landscape and had actors who fully committed to portraying their characters stories. The film also has excellent music masterfully highlighting the emotions of every scene and sharing traditional Polish, Cuban and Chinese styles of music. Using a real ship meant that all the scenes and operation of the vessel were realistic and as a viewer I felt immersed in a long seas' voyage. This is a great film to watch with friends and family so I would highly recommend watching it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/07/23 Full Review Audience Member It has a promising start. A young man has his dream of becoming a captain fulfilled and has to deal with a crew that he needs to win over. Throw in a girl fished out of the water who he needs to hide on board and you have some fine ingredients for a good film. However.. the acting was what let the story down. It was wooden, contrived at places. The gratuitous hints at nudity of a (no doubt) beautiful Zhu Zhu - Who has become a firm Chinese favourite after Cloud Atlas - didid nothing to the story, but to confirm why our captain was so infatuated. Surely was it not her intellect, her knowledge of Marine Ships or even her outstanding swimming ability. That aside, the wary Chinese crew had some (intended?) slapstick moments as to which you could not help but cringe. Yes they made me chuckle, but it was not the film to have this in. I found the best of the film in the pictures, the locations and the atmospheric photograpy. Very accomplished. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member We saw this tonight for a local charity event, with an interesting Q&A with the director and his wife Henrietta. An unexpected treat to be the first review on a Rottentomatoes film! The film is an enjoyable but slight redemption-type ship-bound tale inspired by Conrad's short story. It's no Heart of Darkness or Captain Phillips! After a very slow start, where the two leads in particular are rather wooden, the chemistry between the cast finally starts to warm. I felt the film doesn't quite know what it is: romance? Sea action adventure? Comedy? It doesn't really convince as any of these, but it's a mildly rewarding journey.
