Critics Consensus

Manipulative and content to fall back on charmless camp for most of its runtime, Seriously Red is a serious letdown.

Nell Minow Movie Mom Boylan has the creamy skin and bright blue eyes to shine in the Dolly moments. The musical numbers, presented with sweetness and sincerity, are a lot of fun. The real life scenes are not as lively or effectively staged. Rated: B- Feb 11, 2023 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com The exploration is deep, very deep, so much so that one could easily imagine a much darker and edgier film could have been the result. As it is, "Seriously Red" sneaks up on you. Rated: 3/4 Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times Even at its bluntest, “Seriously Red” draws a lot of heat and light from Boylan, whose Red enjoys embodying the casual confidence, folksy wisdom and bombshell bravura of one of the world’s most beloved entertainers. Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Amy Thomasson InSession Film The performances are entertaining and the story is one that most of us can relate to. Is it groundbreaking? No. But if you are looking for a movie that will make you laugh, feel good, and you enjoy Dolly Parton, this will be an enjoyable film for you. Rated: C Aug 27, 2024 Full Review Damon Wise Deadline Hollywood Daily “We need more Dollys in the world,” is the message of this raucous but hugely enjoyable comedy, which, at the same time, reminds us that there is -- and can only be -- one Dolly Parton. Shirley J A great idea for a story and for the most part delivered with pace and some charm but I found it very hard to relate to the protaganist and her need to find herself. I struggled with her promiscuity, was baffled by her relationships with friends and family and felt the comedy was quite weak. The whole thing took off when we got an Elvis and Neil Diamond impersonator pairing - amazing and I read afterwards this is a real life couple. This was where the talent lay and I just wanted to see more of their stories. Consequently there seemed to have been a missed opportunity. I stuck with it as it is a relatively short film but I wouldn't be seeking it out to view again. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/02/25 Full Review Grant H A clever idea poorly executed. It tried to be in the class of Muriel's Wedding but lacked the wit, storyline and charm. Apart from the lead, the acting was sub-standard. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Michael F Ok movie. Singing pretty good and despite several of my friends being in it, a total let down. Whoever did the makeup for the Kenny Rogers actor definitely needs to go back to makeup school. Not recommended 😔 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/24 Full Review Ken B Seriously Red was seriously disappointing! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/24 Full Review Costa B A promising idea degenerates into a slog, climaxing with an ending that is just too silly to swallow. The wannabe feelgood story ends up being a capitulation to "just be happy being you" homilies. Much time is wasted on subplots with characters - Mom, and a wannabe boyfriend- who are respectively, silly, and dull. Direction is unimaginative, never rising above the prosaic. The film wastes its lively lead performer. She's halfway convincing, unlike the faux Kenny Rogers. The fake androgynous Elvis points at a movie that might have been deeper, darker, and more interesting. Not this time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/10/23 Full Review Amy O As a Dolly Parton stan, I loved this movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
