Grant H A clever idea poorly executed. It tried to be in the class of Muriel's Wedding but lacked the wit, storyline and charm. Apart from the lead, the acting was sub-standard. The wannabe feelgood story ends up being a capitulation to "just be happy being you" homilies. Much time is wasted on subplots with characters - Mom, and a wannabe boyfriend- who are respectively, silly, and dull. Direction is unimaginative, never rising above the prosaic. The film wastes its lively lead performer. She's halfway convincing, unlike the faux Kenny Rogers. The fake androgynous Elvis points at a movie that might have been deeper, darker, and more interesting. Not this time. In conclusion, SERIOUSLY RED is a must-see for all of those who appreciate the timeless appeal of Dolly Parton. The film was a heartfelt, funny, sad, and genuine experience all rolled into one. Keep in mind that this is an R-rated film and, being such, has some reason to take caution with who watches.
