walter m "Soledad's Shawl" is a compelling drama about Dr. Antonio Robles(Antonio de Cordova) who at the age of forty is contemplating the accomplishments of his life while walking to an interview in Mexico City. Once there, he receives a manuscript from Father Juan(Domingo Soler), a priest he knew in Santa Cruz, where Robles had a modest practice tending to the impoverished people of the area while fighting superstition. But in one case, he fails to convince Don Roque(Pedro Armendariz) to save the life of his mother, sending both men packing... While "Soledad's Shawl" may be specifically about the life of a doctor and the medical profession, it is in general about a person's responsibility to society. Robles' frustration comes from his lack of patience and, yes, arrogance. But he does have success on a human level, changing opinions one at a time. And that is how change happens in the real world. The thing is if you have an effect on one life, then yours is worthwhile. Here, the movie is concerned with two lives that Robles has influenced. Yes, it is a little troubling that he occasionally is shut out of his own story, but everything does come together in the end. And that is true even with Armendariz's scenery chewing. Even his horse is overacting... (Originally reviewed in the blog section on August, 24, 2008.) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
